After the unfortunate demise of Trondr Nefas, I thought that Endezzma‘s Erotik Nekrosis would be the last that I hear of his works. But Urgehal and Season of Mist this year surprised me with a brand new Urgehal record. Despite having lost much touch with the extreme metal genres, I decided to just have a listen to Aeons in Sodom without putting much thought into the background of the album.

Thrash Metal

Dave Rotten is a name that is known more for his brutal death metal projects and for running the excellent Spanish extreme metal label Xtreem Music. Having personally already heard his works on bands like AvulsedChrist Denied and Putrevore among many others, it is indeed quite interesting to hear him finally break out of his typecast as a death metal force to reckon with. Instead of the usual brutal death metal style of his other projects, Holycide instead presents a sound that leans more towards the speed and recklessness of old school thrash metal, with Toxic Mutation being the band’s brand new EP release. So can Dave Rotten live up to the hype created?

Formed back in 2009, American black/thrash metal band Frosthelm this year finally releases their debut full length album, The Endless Winter. It’s been quite a long while since my last black/thrash metal madness, so with all the hype surrounding The Endless Winter, I have to say that I was pretty excited to hear what Frosthelm manages to come up with after a wait of almost 6 years.

Having already experienced the frenzied thrash attack on their 2013 debut, Power Behind the Throne, Danish thrash metallers Impalers return this year with their sophomore full length, God from the Machine. With their 2014 EP Prepare for War being rather highly acclaimed and released under the excellent Evil EyE Records, one can be assured of the quality of the thrash metal of the Danish outfit on their new effort.

Death/Thrash/Black Metal

Even before listening to the band’s material, one would already expect them to be heavily Teutonic-influenced, with Invincible Force‘s moniker taken from the same Destruction song. Yet the South American origin of the band, along with the label under which their debut full length, Satan Rebellion Metal is released (Dark Descent Records), kinda gives away what to expect from Invincible Force.

Iron Lamb: “Smile now, cry later”

…words to live by.

Iron Lamb (1)

And here’s our band of the month for January 2015, the mighty Iron Lamb. First catching my ears with their 2011 Pulverised Records debut, The Original Sin, these Swedes are back stronger, groovier and catchier than before with their sophomore full length album, Fool’s Gold. Along with new vocalist Bragman, the band brings us back to the good early days of bands like Motörhead with punk and heavy metal influences. There’s a reason for Fool’s Gold being our pick of January, so let’s find out what goes on behind the scenes with guitarist Johan.

Infernal Execrator is quickly becoming a household name in the Singapore extreme metal circle over the years, along with other war metal-themed bands such as Balberith, and of course, the Mighty Impiety. Since their formation in 2005, the band has had numerous split and EP releases, but it is only last year that the band finally dropped their debut full length album, Ad Infinitum Satanic Adherent.

Of the many new releases in February, one that I have particularly been raving about to friends was Monsterworks‘ new full length album, The Existential Codex. My first encounter with this Kiwi outfit was on one of their 2012 EPs, either Man :: Instincts or Man :: Intrinsic. Doesn’t matter, being the ignorant fool I was back then (and generally disliking EP releases), I paid little attention to them. It wasn’t until last year’s Overhaul that I began to discover the wonder of Monsterworks‘ art, along with my increasing open-mindedness to what different genres of music had to offer.

Albums of the Month – February 2015

If you thought January 2015 was good, then February was even better despite it being a shorter month. We see high profile releases from bands like EnsiferumCarach AngrenEnforcer and Melechesh, along with the more underground spectrum of the genre such as AcherontasDeath Karma and many more. Here’s our shortlist of the albums of the month for February 2015.

Melechesh – Enki (27/2/2015)

MELECHESH - Enki

My favourite Melechesh release has always been their 2003 release Sphynx, following which I have lost touch with the Mesopotamian metal band. This year sees the triumphant return of the band, and they prove that their skills are sharper than ever on Enki. Faster, more brutal, yet sticking to the sound that they have created and popularised much earlier in their career. Top that up with the top-notch production of the album, fans of black/thrash with an Eastern vibe will be in for a treat.

The global old school thrash revival is going strong, with too many bands these days glorifying the early days of thrash metal with their interpretations of the genre. Swiss thrash merchants Comaniac are no different, and 5 years since their formation, the band drops their debut full length album, Return to the Wasteland.
