Triumvir Foul‘s debut offering last year in the form of their demo An Oath of Blood and Fire couldn’t come at a worse time, with my interest in the black/death metal genre, in particularly the barbaric, filthy style declining rapidly. For some reason though, their self-titled full length this year held certain promise, and listening to the 42 minute onslaught on Triumvir Foul, it would have been a mistake to give this release a miss as well.

With all my attention focused on the stoner, doom and psychedelic genres, I have overlooked the filthy, bestial black and death metal that I used to love so much, with the new Archgoat being the only record to really catch my attention so far. That was until I caught wind of American black/death metal horde Valdur releasing their fourth full length album Pathetic Scum, two years after the triumphant release that was At War With.

Towards the end of 2014, New Zealand death horde Witchrist announced the end of the band, along with two final releases; one of which being the EP Vritra. Along with the final two releases, Witchrist ropes in KzR of Bölzer to handle vocals of the band’s swan song.

After more than 15 years, and numerous EP and demo releases, American black/death metal band Sxuperion this year finally drops its debut full length album, Through Cosmic Corridors. The description of the album as atmospheric death metal immediately got my interest, and left me to wonder if this was going to be another Fallujah or Septicflesh onslaught.

Album Review: Sacrocurse – Unholier Master

South American black/death metal horde Sacrocurse returns this year after their highly acclaimed demo Sulphur Blessing with their debut full length album, Unholier Master. With the band boasting former member of such acts as Morbosidad and Unholier, fans of the bestial style of extreme metal will instantly know what they are in for with Unholier Master.

Without wasting any time at all, Sacrocurse kicks off the album with Sepulchral Desolation, and the speed and barbarism that is evident on the track quickly reminds one of the thrashy black/death endeavours of bands such as Impiety and the likes. The chaotic onslaught that the band presents on the album through that wall of noise that hits the listener and that chaotic lead guitars of ZK also instantly brings to mind the filthy style that bands such as Morbosidad and Blasphemophagher have created and popularised. The relentless blasting of LZ throughout the record also bear some James Read resemblance, sure to please fans of his works, along with Black Witchery or Deiphago.

On top of the speed fest that is already present on Unholier Master, the band also includes some moments of heavy, crushing intensity that leans closer to the style that band such as Teitanblood and Antediluvian indulge in, preventing Unholier Master from being a one-dimensional blast-fest, at the same time giving the listener a sense of doom and unease throughout the album.

For fans of extreme metal looking for a nice fusion of Canadian belligerence, along with South American bestiality, Sacrocurse‘s debut album Unholier Master will definitely be a pleaser.
