Stoner Rock/Metal

My love affair with Spiritual Beggars started back in 2010 when ex-Firewind singer Apollo Papathanasio joined the lineup, with myself being a fan of his works while he was in Firewind. While Return to Zero was a simple, rather straightforward hard rock album, Earth Blues saw Spiritual Beggars incorporate some elements of psychedelia into their sound, which left me rather excited when the band announced their ninth full length album earlier this year, Sunrise to Sundown. The beautiful artwork hinted towards an even more psychedelic direction, but is it a hint towards the band’s musical direction?

Atmospheric Doom/Sludge Metal

The first time I heard of The Moth Gatherer was 2 years ago with their last album, A Braight Celestial Light. Not knowing better then, the Swedes were a novelty in terms of the epic soundscape that they managed to create and the fusing of post rock elements into their style of metal. 2 years later, the band returns with their brand new effort The Earth is the Sky, which led me to revisit A Braight Celestial Light resulting in new insights, and better appreciation of these Swedes.

Psychedelic Stoner/Doom Metal

My current run of infatuation with the stoner/doom metal genre has resulted in me discovering bands that I would have otherwise not have heard of, including those with such exotic names as SkraeckoedlanSagor is the Swedish fuzz-rock’s sophomore full length album, and in my quest to find more atmospheric/ambient, the artwork on the album certainly catches my eye.

I remember first discovering Black Trip when The Dagger broke out with their debut album, being far more impressed with Goin’ Under than the already excellent The Dagger album. With Goin’ Under bearing such stark similarities to the first two Iron Maiden albums (which I am also a great fan of), finding out that Black Trip were releasing their sophomore album Shadowline got me even more excited than the new Maiden album. Especially so with the disappointing first single of the aforementioned legends… Even then, could the band live up to the expectations that have been placed upon them with their stellar debut?

With the year thus far already spewing forth new records from EnforcerBlack Trip (more on them in the coming weeks) and the likes, it is hardly surprising that we are presented with yet another slab of the old school from Sweden. While not boasting the same credentials as bands such as Dagger and the other aforementioned bands, Night has been around for about 4 years now, with their sophomore full length Soldiers of Time being released under Gaphals, the very same label that brought us Nocturnalia and Oblivious.

Hard Rock

The foray into bands that pay homage to the roots of hard rock and heavy metal have led me to discover a whole host of new bands that uphold that creed, first with bands like Black Trip then later with the more psychedelic-leaning bands like Nocturnalia. One thing has always remained constant – that the bands’ origins are from where else, but Sweden. Here we have Oblivious‘ third opus, Out of Wilderness, and with their compatriots putting out such quality work, the pressure is on for them as well.

Crust Punk/Hardcore

As it has already become rather obvious, there has been very few extreme releases this year that has managed to catch and retain my attention for more than a few listens. Just as I was about to give up on finding potential new extreme records for the year, a friend recommends Fredag den 13:e to me, with their brand new full length, Domedagar. Describing themselves as nummerpunk/Motörhead scandicrust, one instinctively knows that one is in for one hell of a ride.

Albums of the Month – March 2015

March was a much quieter month than the first two months of 2015, though we did see a number of high profile releases including the new Enslaved (which completely kicked ass), Moonspell and Psycroptic. Anyway, here are our picks for albums of March 2015:

Nocturnalia – Above Below Within (23/3/2015)

Nocturnalia - Above Below WithinPreviously known as NocturnalAbove Below Within is this Swedish outfit’s sophomore full length album, and the first one under their new moniker Nocturnalia. If you thought that their debut Nocturnal was good, Above Below Within sees this psychedelic/occult rock band take things up a notch. With influences ranging from Led Zeppelin to Deep Purple or even Pink Floyd, one instantly knows that he is in for one hell of a trip.

Iron Lamb: “Smile now, cry later”

…words to live by.

Iron Lamb (1)

And here’s our band of the month for January 2015, the mighty Iron Lamb. First catching my ears with their 2011 Pulverised Records debut, The Original Sin, these Swedes are back stronger, groovier and catchier than before with their sophomore full length album, Fool’s Gold. Along with new vocalist Bragman, the band brings us back to the good early days of bands like Motörhead with punk and heavy metal influences. There’s a reason for Fool’s Gold being our pick of January, so let’s find out what goes on behind the scenes with guitarist Johan.

Psychedelic Rock

Seems like one can’t go wrong these days with the psychedelic rock style, with my personal favourite bands nowadays also being of this variant of rock and metal music. On first looks, Nocturnalia (or Nocturnal to some) may seem like a black metal band of sorts, with the occult-themed artwork on their sophomore full length album, Above Below Within. But what is contained on Above Below Within is something much more charming, and much more addictive.
