My love affair with Spiritual Beggars started back in 2010 when ex-Firewind singer Apollo Papathanasio joined the lineup, with myself being a fan of his works while he was in Firewind. While Return to Zero was a simple, rather straightforward hard rock album, Earth Blues saw Spiritual Beggars incorporate some elements of psychedelia into their sound, which left me rather excited when the band announced their ninth full length album earlier this year, Sunrise to Sundown. The beautiful artwork hinted towards an even more psychedelic direction, but is it a hint towards the band’s musical direction?

The foray into bands that pay homage to the roots of hard rock and heavy metal have led me to discover a whole host of new bands that uphold that creed, first with bands like Black Trip then later with the more psychedelic-leaning bands like Nocturnalia. One thing has always remained constant – that the bands’ origins are from where else, but Sweden. Here we have Oblivious‘ third opus, Out of Wilderness, and with their compatriots putting out such quality work, the pressure is on for them as well.

Album Review: Bro Jovi – Songs to Crush Beers to Vol. 1

Bro Jovi - Songs to Crush Beers to Vol 1

Bro Jovi [USA]
Songs to Crush Beers to Vol. 1: Slippery When Blacked

Independent
Stoner/Doom Metal/Southern Rock

I almost thought my eyes were playing tricks on me when I first received an email containing information about Bro Jovi, thinking that it was probably some kind of typo error or another Bon Jovi tribute band. But the first thing that the email warns of is that Bro Jovi is not another Bon Jovi tribute act, and it is immediately evident with the title of the band’s debut, Songs to Crush Beers to Vol. 1: Slippery When Blacked.

Featuring former members of bands such as Abigail Williams and Aborted, one could be assured of the quality of musicianship on Bro Jovi, yet there still remains some hesitance the first time one pushes the play button. Fortunately, the band manages to show how they can translate their musicality into another genre, and what Bro Jovi presents on Songs to Crush Beers to is some extremely groovy and enjoyable stoner/doom metal, with a nice Southern rock touch to complete that entire beer-crushing experience. The riffs unleashed by Michael and Ken from the start with Sanctuary of the Beast immediately brings bands such as Spiritual Beggars to mind.

At the same time the band retains that aggressive touch to their music, and despite the grooviness that is abound on the album, for the most part Songs to Crush Beers to is quite a heavy listening experience, and along with that sweet, gruff vocals of Rob, one can’t help but to be reminded of the style of the excellent Japanese stoner/doom outfit Church of Misery. The heavy presence of the bass also helps in reinforcing that groove on the album.

Paying tribute to the roots of doom and stoner, there are even moments on the album where one is reminded of landmark classics such as Black Sabbath‘s Master of Reality. The Southern rock influences can also get rather heavy on some of the tracks, with songs like Deer Hunter seeing Thomas happily cow belling his way through most of the track, and closing track Drifter is just a complete Southern rock track.

Truth be told, there hasn’t been many new stoner releases that can retain my attention as much as Bro Jovi‘s Songs to Crush Beers to, and with releases as such, one now knows where to go for their fix of stoner metal.

GENE HOGLAN: Teaser For ‘The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two’ DVD

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

A teaser for “The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two”, the forthcoming DVD from legendary extreme-metal drummer Gene Hoglan (TESTAMENTDEATHSTRAPPING YOUNG LADDARK ANGELDETHKLOK), can be seen at this location.

In a recent interview with Metal AssaultGene stated about what fans can expect to see on the forthcoming disc: “Well, I managed to get licenses to a lot of songs that I’ve played. We put together a small track listing of me playing along to the actual recorded versions of a lot of people’s favorite tunes.

“On the next one, I’m getting even more licenses, but on this one I’ve included a bunch of bands that I’ve played for and still playing for. That’s the notable difference.

“On the first “The Atomic Clock”, I didn’t get any licenses so I merely played to the band MECHANISM, which at the time was my main focus. I even played two instrumental tracks of MECHANISM as opposed to playing the whole song. This time I’m not playing instrumental tracks except for one from one of my more popular bands, but I’ve got all the basic instrumental backing tracks and I’m playing along to those as opposed to having all the vocals, samples and everything else on it. For the most part, that’s a major difference and that’s really exciting, seeing myself play to actual recorded tracks to some of these cool bands.

“It’s in the stages of editing right now. It’s coming along great; it looks better than the last one and way more pro. It’s an improved version of the last one. I’m still pretty light-hearted in it and I don’t take myself real seriously. It’s got a lot of footage that the last one didn’t have. So I’m sure people checking it out will see that it’s definitely a departure from the first one. That was done on a shoe-string budget, pretty much all by myself, but for this one I’ve got a team of experts helping me with it.”

Earlier this week, Gene announced a few of the tracks that will be included on the DVD:

TESTAMENT – “Rise Up”
MELDRUM – “A Toast To Romance”
GALAKTIKON – “On My Way”
STRAPPING YOUNG LAD – “Skeksis”

The jam-packed DVD is available for pre-sale now, with several awesome package options.

Hoglan is heralded and is inspirational to many, even outside of his drumming and now celebrates a 30-year career in music as metal’s in-demand legendary drummer. Gene is the only metal drummer to accomplish two No. 1 records on the rock charts in 2012 with TESTAMENT‘s “Dark Roots Of Earth” and DETHKLOK‘s “Dethalbum III”.

Hoglan is currently making a series of appearances under the “The Gene Hoglan Experience” banner. According to a press release, “The Gene Hoglan Experience” is “an intimate gathering of metal fans brought together to celebrate the legacy and 30-year career of one of metal’s most legendary drummers.”

Hoglan came up with this concept to give the fans what they want: the ultimate “Gene” experience. In addition to telling personal stories, as mentioned above, Hoglan will reveal some of his secret techniques and tips to help all drummers and musicians of all levels.

You get to meet Hoglan and have access to his exclusive merchandise from Gene himself.

Remaining “The Gene Hoglan Experience” dates:

Oct. 01 – Hollywood, CA @ Whisky A Go Go
Oct. 04 – San Jose, CA @ Milano’s
Oct. 17 – Coralville, IA @ West Music Coralville at 6:00 p.m.
Oct. 19 – New Berlin, WI @ Cascio Interstate Music (part of Drummer Fest) at 11:00 a.m. (free)

Guitarist KIRK WINDSTEIN Exits DOWN

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

Guitarist Kirk Windstein appears to have exited DOWN in order to focus “100%” on his other band, CROWBARWindstein is not taking part in the songwriting sessions for the next DOWN EP and is being replaced in that band by longtime DOWN stage manager and HONKY founding guitarist Bobby Landgraf.

Writing on FacebookWindstein said: “For months now, I have been posting that I am concentrating on CROWBAR 100% FULL TIME…

“2014 marks the 25th anniversary of CROWBAR and it’s a great feeling to put my heart and soul into something that I created so long ago.

“We are entering the studio on December 16 to record our 10th full-length record. Look for a late spring release on eOne.

“See y’all on the road with CROWBAR!!!”

Added Landgraf in a separate posting: “Feeling very lucky to have this gig with DOWN. It wouldn’t be the same without Kirk Windstein‘s blessing. He is Riff Lord and the new CROWBAR will be amazing.”

DOWN bassist Pat Bruders recently left CROWBAR and was replaced in the latter band by Jeff Golden.

Said Windstein in a new Facebook posting: “I will say it again… With my decision months ago to focus 100% on CROWBARPat resigned as our bassist, and I respect his decision because it’s impossible to give 100% to two bands. I am giving my ALL to CROWBAR as he is giving his ALL to DOWN. There is no animosity… no drama… Just great music being written by all, and that sounds pretty awesome to me!”

SPIRITUAL BEGGARS: ‘Turn The Tide’ Video Released

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

“Turn The Tide”, the new video from SPIRITUAL BEGGARS — the Swedish band featuring ARCH ENEMY guitarist Michael Amott and bassist Sharlee D’Angelo, along with vocalist Apollo Papathanasio (ex-FIREWIND) — can be seen at this location. The song comes off SPIRITUAL BEGGARS‘ eighth studio album, “Earth Blues”, which was released on April 16 (one day earlier internationally) via InsideOut Music.

Comments Amott: “Excited to have a second video off our ‘Earth Blues’ opus — just in time before we hit the road in Europe and Japan in October/November!

“We filmed this video in Mexico City and Cologne, Germany earlier this year while Martin Björnlund of Flat Feet Productions did a superb job on a heavy and psychedelic edit back home in Sweden.”

Just in time for the upcoming tour, SPIRITUAL BEGGARS will reissue two of its classic catalog titles on October 14: the band’s 2005 “Demons” album will be available for the first time ever on vinyl via InsideOut Music; and their acclaimed and hard-to-find debut LP, the self-titled “Spiritual Beggars” from 1994, will be re-released with over 70 minutes of unreleased bonus material via Century Media Records. Look out for more details about these titles soon.

Amott previously stated about “Earth Blues”: “I had the idea for this artwork from my time as a child, seeing posters of two young lovers watching a romantic sunset on the beach — just your typical tacky bedroom art in the ’70s, really… Also, growing up in what is now referred to with some nostalgia as the Atomic Age — the threat of nuclear war was always looming over our heads it seemed. I wanted to combine these two images of my youth in one paradoxical image and Per Wiberg of Hippograffix (and SPIRITUAL BEGGARS keyboardist) really managed to capture the melancholic feeling perfectly. Earth Blues, indeed.”

Regarding the making of “Earth Blues”Amott said: “We started the recording process of ‘Earth Blues’ with an eight-day-long session at Fat Guitar Studios (Sweden) with knob-twiddler Roberth Ekholm, a truly great dude who really knows how to capture a band jamming live, sadly a rare quality in recording engineers nowadays! We continued with some overdubs at various studios in Sweden, and it’s all come together super easy this time. Sonically, I think this might be our finest hour yet. It’s a raw, heavy and honest record.”

SPIRITUAL BEGGARS 2013 is:

Michael Amott (ARCH ENEMY, CARCASS) – Guitar
Ludwig Witt (FIREBIRD) – Drums
Per Wiberg (OPETH) – Keyboards
Sharlee D’Angelo (ARCH ENEMY, MERCYFUL FATE) – Bass
Apollo Papathanasio (FIREWIND) – Vocals

KATAKLYSM: ‘Waiting For The End To Come’ Cover Artwork Unveiled

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

The CD and limited-cassette main artwork from Peter Sallai for“Waiting For The End To Come”, the forthcoming concept album from Montreal, Quebec, Canada-based death metallers KATAKLYSM, can be seen below.

Comments KATAKLYSM frontman Maurizio Iacono: “The album art depicts a child which represents innocence in humanity, covered in dirt and blood from life’s experiences. In front of him, his death represented by a reaper who comes to claim his soul for the afterlife, or the abyss. It’s open to the fans to decide with their own beliefs. In the end this is the transition between life and death.”

Due in October via Nuclear Blast Records, the follow-up to 2010’s“Heaven’s Venom” was recorded by KATAKLYSM guitarist Jean-François Dagenais, who has previously worked with MALEVOLENT CREATIONMISERY INDEX and DESPISED ICON, among others, and mixed by Chris “Zeuss” Harris (SUFFOCATIONHATEBREEDARSIS). Other songtitles set to appear on the CD include “If I was God… I’d Burn It All”“Under Lawless Skies” and “Kill The Elite”.

KATAKLYSM will film a music video this month in Belgrade, Serbia with acclaimed director Ivan Colic from iCode Productions (EX DEO,SOILWORKMOONSPELLALESTORMKAMELOT).

Ivan Colic previously worked with KATAKLYSM frontman Maurizio Iacono on KATAKLYSM’s “Push The Venom” video and EX DEO’s“Romulus” and “Final War (Battle Of Actium)” clips.

Filming will commence in August for “a very ambitious and sick” video for the song “Elevate” from KATAKLYSM’s forthcoming concept album,“Waiting For The End To Come”. According to the band, the plan is to bring the viewers into a visual masterpiece of chaos, a chaos based around the ideals of death, the purpose of life, the human factor, and the semi-coma state that most people in this world exist in.

Says Iacono: “In a nutshell, we believe we wrote the most intense, intricate storyline for a video clip ever made in death metal and our genre. Big statement? Well, we’ve got big ideas and we need to put it to life with crazy visuals. We hired the man who has the balls and the artistic capacity to execute this task plus one of the best special FX teams in Europe to back him up. It’s time to up the game. We’re back and we’re swinging hard.”

As previously reported, KATAKLYSM has recruited ex-NEURAXISdrummer Oli Beaudoin to sit behind the kit during the recording sessions for “Waiting For The End To Come”Beaudoin is also playing all ofKATAKLYSM’s currenty announced shows.

Drummer Max Duhamel announced on April 8 that he was taking a break from KATAKLYSM to deal with issues related to alcohol abuse.

MALEVOLENT CREATION: New Song Available For Streaming

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

Decibel magazine is streaming “Face Your Fear” a brand new song from Florida-based death metal veterans MALEVOLENT CREATION. The track, which can be streamed using the SoundCloud widget at this location, was recorded, produced and mixed at drummer Gus Rios’ studio, Riversound Productions, except for the vocals, which were laid down with Jim Nickles at his Shredly Studios.

“This is only one song of many Phil [Fasciana, guitar] and I are working on,” Gus Rios tells Decibel.

“We are still debating how we are going to go about releasing new music.

“For a band like ours, with 11 albums and more than 110 songs, it’s just not making sense to record 10 new songs. We are thinking (still not 100%) that doing EPs might be the way. That way we can concentrate on writing five really good songs and play them all live as well.

“We don’t want to be a band that has to rely on its past. We want to write songs that are good enough that people will want to hear them live, as well as the ‘classics.’ And realistically, we would only do about five songs off of any new album anyway due to the extensive catalog.”

Regarding how MALEVOLENT CREATION has managed to retain its musical identity after going through so many lineup changes over the course of the last 20 years, Gus Rios told Rádio Evil: “Since 1997, pretty much every single MALEVOLENT CREATION song anybody’s ever heard, me and Phil [Fasciana, guitar] actually wrote. I live in Fort Lauderdale, and so does Phil, and that’s the songwriting nucleus of MALEVOLENT. So as long as the two of us are still in the band, it’s always gonna sound likeMALEVOLENT CREATION, you know what I mean?! That’s the consistency of the band — the primary songwriters. And then, of course,Brett [Hoffman, vocals].”

MALEVOLENT CREATION’s latest album, “Invidious Dominion”, was released in August 2010 in North America via Nuclear Blast Records (in Europe through Massacre). The effort was made available in various territories as a regular CD; digipack with bonus material; and vinyl LP.

“Invidious Dominion” was recorded at Mana Recording Studios(CANNIBAL CORPSEVITAL REMAINSGOATWHORE) in St. Petersburg, Florida with producer Erik Rutan (MORBID ANGELHATE ETERNALCANNIBAL CORPSE). The CD’s cover art was created by renowned artist Pär Olofsson (THE FACELESSIMMORTALABYSMAL DAWN).

DREAM THEATER: New Song ‘The Enemy Inside’ Available For Streaming

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

“The Enemy Inside”, a brand new song from progressive metal giantsDREAM THEATER, can be streamed at this location (courtesy of USAToday.com). The track comes off the band’s new, self-titled album — the band’s 12th studio release overall, and fourth with Roadrunner Records — which is due on on September 24.

Says guitarist John Petrucci about “Dream Theater”: “I see every new album as an opportunity to start over. To either build or improve upon a direction that has been evolving over time or to completely break new ground.

“This is the first self-titled album of our career and there is nothing I can think of that makes a statement of musical and creative identity stronger than that. We’ve fully explored all of the elements that make us unique, from the epic and intense to the atmospheric and cinematic.

“We’re incredibly excited about ‘Dream Theater’ and can’t wait for everyone to hear it.”

The nine-track disc was recorded at Cove City Studio in Glen Cove, Long Island, with Petrucci producing and Richard Chycki engineering and mixing. It’s the band’s second album with drummer Mike Mangini, and the first one on which he was a part of the writing process from Day One.

In January, Petrucci said of Mangini’s work: “When people hear the drumming on this album, they’re gonna be pretty freaked out. On the last album, he did a great job, but he wasn’t there for the writing process and he was interpreting drum parts that I had programmed. Even though he used his creativity, of course, to change them up and do his thing, I feel like now he’s just Mike Mangini unleashed. It’s all him. It’s all his creativity, all his decisions and ideas and man, the guy’s an animal.”

“Dream Theater” track listing:

01. False Awakening Suite
I. Sleep Paralysis
II. Night Terrors
III. Lucid Dream
02. The Enemy Inside
03. The Looking Glass
04. Enigma Machine
05. The Bigger Picture
06. Behind The Veil

09. Illumination Theory
I. Paradoxe de la Lumière Noire
II. Live, Die, Kill
III. The Embracing Circle
IV. The Pursuit of Truth

“Dream Theater” will be available in a wide range of distinctive versions, including standard and special edition CDs, 180-gram double LP, and a limited-edition boxed set. Pre-orders are scheduled to launch in July at the Roadrunner Records webstore.

Just in time for the upcoming tour, SPIRITUAL BEGGARS will reissue two of its classic catalog titles on October 14: the band’s 2005 “Demons”album will be available for the first time ever on vinyl via InsideOut Music; and their acclaimed and hard-to-find debut LP, the self-titled“Spiritual Beggars” from 1994, will be re-released with over 70 minutes of unreleased bonus material via Century Media Records. DEMONICAL Parts Ways With Drummer, Guitarist

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

Swedish death metallers DEMONICAL have parted ways with drummerFredrik Widigs and guitarist Johan Jansson due to “personal and priority-related matters.” The remaining members of the band write in a statement: “These decisions have been in the making for quite some time but now all parties consider them final and official. Both Johan andFredrik have been loyal soldiers and we thank them for their participation. However, rest assured, as the main songwriters are still in the band the mission, goal and outcome of DEMONICAL stays determined and intact.”

They add: “Currently we are looking to secure new members and we are hoping to present an updated lineup within the nearest future (applications are welcome, although we are already trying out a couple of potential candidates).

“We are soon rounding up the recordings of our fourth album, ‘Darkness Unbound’, at Necromorbus Studios in Stockholm but we have decided to postpone the release date to August in order to better match our upcoming live activities and anticipated world tour.”

Regarding the musical direction and visual presentation of “Darkness Unbound”DEMONICAL previously said: “The new material is clearly our most sinister, vicious and dark work up until to date and we are confident that ‘Darkness Unbound’ will be an important milestone not only for us as a band but also an album that will have a certain impact on the current death metal scene and especially the Swedish old-school wave.

“The artwork and visual concept of the album follows the same somber path as the music making it a solid entity of perpetual death metal darkness.”

DEMONICAL last year announced the addition of guitarist Daniel Gustavsson to the group’s ranks.

The band’s third album, “Death Infernal”, was released in April 2011 viaCyclone Empire.

He said in a statement, “After more than 250 shows and 10 years being in the band, I feel that now time has come to change my priorities a bit and see what else life has to offer for me. No hard feelings involved; it’s just that I cannot motivate myself for another writing-rehearsing-recording-promoting-touring cycle and that I’m really annoyed by some of the music business mechanisms that one has to deal with in order to continue this beautiful and exciting, but at the same time very time- and energy-consuming hobby. I wish SUIDAKRA much luck and success for the future — it would all be well deserved!”

THE MOTH GATHERER Streaming New Album In Full

Unconventionally and emotionally sounding metal duo THE MOTH GATHERER have made their entire new album available for streaming prior to release date. The debut full-length entitled “A Bright Celestial Light” will hit the shops on CD and vinyl on the 16th of April worldwide via Agonia Records. It can now be listened to in full at the link below.

https://soundcloud.com/agoniarecords/the-moth-gatherer-full-album-stream

THE MOTH GATHERER is recommended for fans of music in the vein of NeurosisPelicanBreach or Cult of Luna“We just want our music to be an emotional explosion” – comments Alex, co-founder. “A lot of the songs is about death, missing people you loved who have passed away and losing hope in mankind. We want the music to make you feel like you can move mountains with it. I wish for that when people hear our recording, they start to dream away.”

Due to the non-one-dimensional approach towards the created songs, the band’s playing style is hard to label. While it’s moving on the verge of the Experimental/Progressive metal etiquette, at the same time it introduces emotional and doomy compositions. The debut offers up long and complex tracks, but still surprisingly simple and compelling, with an abundance of tempo changes and variations. The end result basks in an emotionally charged recording, progressive, yet filled with utterly melodic slower-sections, addictive enough to stimulate the imagination. ”Hypnotic, lusciously heavy and breathtaking” – Rock N Reel Reviews“You really should not miss this one” – Cvlt Nation.

Tracklist:

1. The Water That We All Come To Need
2. Intervention
3. A Road of Gravel and Skulls
4. The Womb, The Woe, The Woman
5. A Falling Deity

The band is: Alex Stjernfeldt and Victor Wegeborn – who both handle: guitars, bass, electronics, vocals and drums.

British doom legends CATHEDRAL will release their final studio album, “The Last Spire”, on April 30 via Rise Above Records. Recorded at Orgone Studios in London, produced by Lee Dorrian and Garry Jennings with assistance, mixing by Jamie Gomez Arellano, and art by Dave Patchettand Arik Roper, “The Last Spire” will stand as the band’s final effort.

“The Last Spire” track listing:

05. Infestation Of Grey Death
06. An Observation

08. This Body, Thy Tomb

The first single to be released, “Tower Of Silence”, can be heard now below.

And lo, Lee Dorrian, mouthpiece of CATHEDRAL for 23 years, doth solemnly intone the death rites of this mighty British metal titan. Born in the dying days of Thatcher’s Britain, bonding over then-unfashionable, obscure names like SAINT VITUSPENTAGRAMTROUBLE and DREAM DEATHCATHEDRAL’s sole ambition was to record a demo tape. In fact they revolutionized doom metal, first pushing their influences into new avenues of grinding extremity, then pioneering groovier forms of ’70s-indebted stoner doom.

Lee Dorrian says: “When the last mix was finally done, there was a massive sense of relief. I think this was partly due to the fact that it meant CATHEDRAL could finally be put to rest but also because we felt we’d done something that we were all very pleased with. I feel comfortable leaving ‘The Last Spire’ as our legacy.” Dorrian continues, “The funeral of CATHEDRAL has been a long but gratifying process. Deciding to end the band wasn’t an easy decision to make but we knew deep down in our hearts that it was the right thing to do.”

“The Last Spire” was recorded by:

Lead Vocals – Lee Dorrian
Guitars – Garry Jennings
Bass – Scott Carlson
Drums – Brian Dixon
Hammond, Mellotron, Moog & Synths – David Moore
Guest Vocals on ‘Cathedral Of The Damned’ – Chris Reifert

CATHEDRAL recently released its first new recorded material in three years exclusively via Decibel magazine’s subscriber-only Decibel Flexi Series. The song, “Vengeance Of The Blind Dead”, can be heard in the flexi included in the February 2013 issue. The track is also streaming onDecibel’s SoundCloud page. Limited quantities of the issue with the flexi can be ordered on DecibelMagazine.com.

Former IRON MAIDEN Drummer CLIVE BURR Dies

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

British heavy metal legends IRON MAIDEN have released the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened to report that Clive Burr passed away last night. He had suffered poor health for many years after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and died peacefully in his sleep at home.”

IRON MAIDEN bassist Steve Harris said: “This is terribly sad news. Clivewas a very old friend of all of us. He was a wonderful person and an amazing drummer who made a valuable contribution to MAIDEN in the early days when we were starting out. This is a sad day for everyone in the band and those around him and our thoughts and condolences are with his partner Mimi and family at this time.”

Added MAIDEN vocalist Bruce Dickinson: “I first met Clive when he was leaving SAMSON and joining IRON MAIDEN. He was a great guy and a man who really lived his life to the full. Even during the darkest days of his M.S., Clive never lost his sense of humour or irreverence. This is a terribly sad day and all our thoughts are with Mimi and the family.”

Clive joined MAIDEN in 1979 and performed on the first three albums —“Iron Maiden” (1980), “Killers” (1981) and “The Number Of The Beast”(1982). Prior to that, he was a member of SAMSON, the band Brucefronted before he, too, joined MAIDEN.

IRON MAIDEN established the Clive Burr MS Trust Fund in 2002 to benefit Clive Burr.

SPIRITUAL BEGGARS: ‘Wise As A Serpent’ Video Released

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

“Wise As A Serpent”, the new video from SPIRITUAL BEGGARS — the Swedish band featuring ARCH ENEMY guitarist Michael Amott and bassist Sharlee D’Angelo, along with vocalist Apollo Papathanasio(ex-FIREWIND) — can be seen below. The song comes off the group’s eighth studio album, “Earth Blues”, which will be released on April 16 (one day earlier internationally) via InsideOut Music.

Commented Amott: “We chose this particular song as the first video off‘Earth Blues’ ’cause it’s an explosive track and also the shortest song on the album! I filmed and directed the video myself and Anders Björler (AT THE GATES) did a great job on the edit. We’re more than pleased with the end result; it’s done in true DIY spirit…raw and authentic.”

“Earth Blues” track listing

01. Wise As A Serpent
02. Turn The Tide
03. Sweet Magic Pain
04. Hello Sorrow
05. One Man’s Curse
06. Dreamer
07. Too Old To Die Young
08. Kingmaker
09. Road To Madness
10. Dead End Town
11. Freedom Song
12. Legends Collapse

Amott previously stated about the upcoming CD: “I had the idea for this artwork from my time as a child, seeing posters of two young lovers watching a romantic sunset on the beach — just your typical tacky bedroom art in the ’70s, really… Also, growing up in what is now referred to with some nostalgia as the Atomic Age — the threat of nuclear war was always looming over our heads it seemed. I wanted to combine these two images of my youth in one paradoxical image and Per Wiberg ofHippograffix (and SPIRITUAL BEGGARS keyboardist) really managed to capture the melancholic feeling perfectly.

In order to promote this upcoming release as well as the band’s anniversary, SPIRITUAL BEGGARS have confirmed a European tour for April with support by German rockers ZODIAC, as well as some European summer festivals.

SPIRITUAL BEGGARS in 2011 released a live CD entitled “Return To Live: Loud Park 2010” in Japan via Trooper Entertainment. The disc features eight songs, capturing the bands high-energy performance at Loud Park 10 at Saitama Super Arena, Japan on October 17, 2010. The live recording was mixed in Sweden by Staffan Karlsson and Rickard Bengtsson atStudio Landgren 5.3 and The Sweet Spot Studio in December 2010. The artwork and design was handled by Hippograffix.

The new lineup of SPIRITUAL BEGGARS made its live debut on October 1, 2010 at Kyttaro club in Athens, Greece.

SPIRITUAL BEGGARS’s seventh studio album, “Return To Zero”, was released in Japan on August 25, 2010 via Trooper Entertainment Inc. — the label founded by legendary Japanese heavy metal music industry guruTetsu Miyamoto. The Japanese special edition comes in a glossy paper box with a poster and a sticker of the CD front cover. The Japanese edition also features a bonus track, a thunderous cover of URIAH HEEP’s“Time To Live” off the legendary U.K. band’s 1971 “Salisbury” record.

“Return To Zero” was released in North America on October 12, 2010 viaInsideOut Music. The follow-up to 2005’s “Demons” was recorded atSweetspot Studio with producer Rickard Bengtsson.

AVANTASIA: ‘The Mystery Of Time’ Trailer Released

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

A trailer for “The Mystery Of Time”, the new album from EDGUYfrontman Tobias Sammet’s AVANTASIA project, can be seen below. Due on March 30, the effort will be made available as a regular CD, limited-edition vinyl and limited-edition hardcover book with a 28-page booklet containing ten regular songs and two bonus tracks (“The Cross And You”“Death Is Just A Feeling”). The cover artwork was hand-painted by world acclaimed British fantasy artist Rodney Matthews. AmongRodney’s most famous artworks are not only album covers for rock legends such as MAGNUMTHIN LIZZYASIA and NAZARETH, he has also designed the characters for the TV series “Lavender Castle” and created the covers for novels by British fantasy author Michael Moorcockand many more.

Comments Tobias: “It is a great honor for me to have Rodney create the artwork of ‘The Mystery Of Time’.

“Since the new album is a conceptual album and its story has a magical and enchanting atmosphere, there was no other painter I could think of to create the artwork.

“I’ve had several creative conversations with Rodney during the process and I had the feeling that the concept was inspiring to him right from the start.

“I put a lot of energy into producing a very detailed and fascinating album, and Rodney had that same enthusiasm to create an artwork just as detailed and fascinating.

“This is a new chapter in AVANTASIA’s history and I think it didn’t deserve less than a magical painting by my favorite painter and childhood hero: The one and only Rodney Matthews!”

“The Mystery Of Time” will feature guest appearances by Joe Lynn Turner (RAINBOWDEEP PURPLEYNGWIE MALMSTEEN), Michael Kiske (UNISONICHELLOWEEN), SAXON frontman Biff Byford, formerKISS guitarist Bruce Kulick, drummer Russell Gilbrook of URIAH HEEP,AYREON mastermind Arjen Lucassen (also ex-BODINEVENGEANCE),Ronnie Atkins of Danish hard rock veterans PRETTY MAIDS and MR. BIGfrontman Eric Martin.

The new AVANTASIA CD was recorded in part at VOX Klangstudio in Bendestorf, Germany with producer Sascha Paeth (KAMELOTEDGUY,EPICARHAPSODY).

“The Mystery Of Time” track listing:

01. Spectres
02. The Watchmakers’ Dream
03. Black Orchid
04. Where Clock Hands Freeze
05. Sleepwalking
06. Savior In The Clockwork
07. Invoke The Machine
08. What’s Left Of Me
09. Dweller In A Dream
10. The Great Mystery

Immediately after the release of “The Mystery Of Time”, a metal opera based on a story written by Sammet, the band will embark on a full-fledged indoor tour, during which the band and special guests will bring the epic undertaking to the stage.

Since the performances will embrace all the different eras and history ofAVANTASIA, these shows will feature an extended playing time and the entire evening will be dedicated to AVANTASIA with no support acts.

Tobias originally wanted to put AVANTASIA to rest after the release of the “The Flying Opera – Around The World In 20 Days” concert DVD in April 2011, but he has since had a change of heart. He explains, “Even though I love to record and tour with EDGUY, I didn’t foresee how much I need AVANTASIA when I decided to finish this chapter of my life in 2011. I didn’t know if there would be another AVANTASIA album one day, but I didn‘t feel like doing it. After the worldwide success of the latest studio releases, an arena world tour that was sold out pretty much everywhere, collaborations with childhood heroes like Alice CooperKlaus Meine,Rudolf SchenkerEric Singer of KISS, etc. I ‘knew’ that I had said everything I could possibly say in the name of AVANTASIA. But that’s not what AVANTASIA is all about. I wanna create more great music, I wanna create more fantasy worlds, the bigger and the more epic, the better. And listening to the material that I have created for this forthcoming chapter in the history of AVANTASIA, I know there is no way I am not going to do it! I have got the feeling and the certainty that this is absolutely meant to happen and to be!”

That’s the GHOST experience.” Decibeleditor-in-chief Albert Mudrian said, “For the cover of our 100th issue, we wanted to spotlight a band that embodies the ideals of the magazine: theatricality, black humor, love for both the past and present of extreme music. GHOST meets and exceeds all of those criteria, and we couldn’t be more excited to reveal the exclusive story of the making of their sophomore album.”

The band’s debut album, “Opus Eponymous”, was released in late 2010 in Europe and in early 2011 in North America via Rise Above Records.

RIGOR MORTIS Completes Mixing Final Album

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

Dallas, Texas-based producer/engineer/mixer Kerry Crafton has finished mixing the long-awaited fourth and final release from the legendary Texas thrash metal band RIGOR MORTIS. Entitled “Slaves To The Grave”, the CD was recorded at 13th Planet Studio in El Paso, Texas in February 2012.Mike Scaccia produced the sessions and MINISTRY frontman Al Jourgensen was the executive producer. Completion of the CD was delayed while Scaccia was on a European tour with the band MINISTRYand then by Scaccia’s sudden passing.

Scaccia brought the tracks back to Dallas to be mixed by longtime friend Crafton. Crafton engineered the first RIGOR MORTIS album, “Rigor Mortis”, for Capitol Records in 1988. Crafton was the producer, engineer and mixer on the third RIGOR MORTIS release for Triple X Records“Rigor Mortis vs The Earth”. He now closes out the RIGOR MORTIS legacy by mixing the band’s final CD.

Mixing began in December and Crafton and Scaccia had only one day together to begin the mixing process before the tragic onstage passing ofScaccia at the Rail Club in Ft. Worth while playing with RIGOR MORTIS.

Commented Crafton: “After Mikey died, it was very hard to open up the session and get back to mixing. I expected to have my buddy Mike with me as I did all the mixes. Instead, we had just one day together to set up basic tones and for him to explain what was what. It was a couple of weeks before I was able to begin again. When I got back to it, I found it both heartbreaking and cathartic. Though Mike was gone physically, I still was blessed with his musical presence every day as I soldiered on through the tears.

“This record is amazing. MikeBruce CorbittHarden Harrison andCasey Orr all performed brilliantly in the recording of this album and I believe they all did the best work of their lives. I feel very lucky to have had the chance to mix this project for such a great group of musicians and friends. The depth and breadth of the material is really awesome. This will, obviously, be the last project from RIGOR MORTIS, but it is a great final musical statement.”

The CD is currently being shopped to several interested labels and a release is expected this summer.

SEPULTURA Begins Writing New Album

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

Brazilian/American thrashers SEPULTURA have commenced the songwriting process for their next album, tentatively due in late 2013 via Nuclear Blast Records.

Several photos from the first day of the writing sessions can be found atthis location.

SEPULTURA played its first show with drummer Eloy Casagrande(GLÓRIAANDRÉ MATOS) on November 25, 2011 in Lichtenfels, Germany.

Casagrande joined SEPULTURA as the replacement for Jean Dolabella, who left the band because he could no longer handle being away from home for long periods of time.

Eloy is a 21-year-old drum prodigy from São Paulo, Brazil who won theModern Drummer ”Undiscovered Drummer” contest as a teenager in 2006.

Asked what Casagrande has added to the band, SEPULTURA singerDerrick Green told Metal Hammer, “Definitely the fact that he’s young and that energy helps a lot. He’s a very disciplined drummer — he’s been playing since he was seven. And he’s been doing a lot of things by himself and playing with different people, and that’s really, really impressive. He had a lot of things put together before we even met him; he’s already done so much. And I think with us, a combination us together, it’s a great learning process for him to grow and at the same time, we’re learning a lot from him, so we can do this together. And this is something extremely important when you’re doing a band that’s been together for so long, to have this connection. And we felt this connection with him immediately. And we could tell that he was very focused and very committed to doing extremely good music.”

Dolabella left SEPULTURA after a five-year run of relentless touring and two studio albums. He joined SEPULTURA in 2006 following the departure of the band’s original drummer, Igor Cavalera.

SEPULTURA has spent most of the past year and half on tour in support of its 12th studio album, and Nuclear Blast Records debut, “Kairos”, which hit stores in July 2011.

DARK TRANQUILLITY Completes Recording New Album

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

Swedish melodic death metallers DARK TRANQUILLITY have completed recording their tenth studio album, “Construct”, for a May 27 release viaCentury Media Records. The CD will be mixed by Jens Bogren(PARADISE LOSTOPETHKATATONIA) at his Fascination Streetstudios in Örebro, Sweden.

Commented the band: “Friends! Today is exactly three months before the release of the ‘Construct’, and it’s also the day on which the very last note of music for the album was recorded. After countless of hours in the studio, our work is finally 100% finished. We’ll now treat ourselves to some well needed rest and look forward to sharing more news with you in the near future.”

DARK TRANQUILLITY recently amicably parted ways with bassist Daniel Antonsson. According to the band, “Daniel wanted to focus on his own musical projects as well as working more in his recording studio. Being first and foremost a guitarist, he felt that the playing bass in a full-time band didn’t allow him much time for his main instrument and true passion. With this in mind, he chose to follow his heart and step aside at this point instead of committing to another album and an intense touring cycle that would leave little room for other activities.”

DARK TRANQUILLITY’s next live appearance is scheduled for April in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Some European summer festivals are already announced and the band is also working on a North American tour for September.

DARK TRANQUILLITY digitally released the “Zero Distance” EP on October 22, 2012 in North America. Taken from the European tour edition of “We Are The Void” (2010), the five tracks on the EP are a must-have for any diehard DARK TRANQUILLITY fan.

DARK TRANQUILLITY’s ninth CD, “We Are The Void”, sold around 2,100 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The effort landed at position No. 15 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

KYLESA: New Song Available For Streaming

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

Savannah-based quintet KYLESA will release its new album,“Ultraviolet”, on May 24 in Europe and May 28 in North America viaSeason Of Mist. The follow-up to “Spiral Shadow” was recorded at The Jam Room in Columbia, South Carolina, with the band’s guitar player/songwriter and sought-after producer, Phillip Cope (BARONESS,BLACK TUSK), once again overseeing production.

“Unspoken”, a new song from the eleven-track album, is available now for streaming below.

“Whereas ‘Spiral Shadow’ was a warm album suggesting concepts of hope, ‘Ultraviolet’ is a bit colder and darker,” explains KYLESAsongwriter/guitar player Laura Pleasants. “All of our studio albums have their own unique identity and we’ve always been a band who strives for something different than what current fads suggest. With ‘Ultraviolet’, we took a step inward and wrote music that we felt we had to write; this album centers around the multiple themes of loss and you can feel it in the music. Everyone goes through it during their lifetime and this record reflects that experience.”

KYLESA issued a rarities collection in November titled “From The Vaults, Vol. 1”, which featured previously unreleased, new and alternate versions of songs spanning the band’s catalog as well as one new song titled “End Truth”Cope and Pleasants spent over a year going through their archives preparing the release.

KYLESA will return to the road in May, with more details forthcoming.

CARCASS: New Album Details Revealed

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

Reactivated British extreme metal legends CARCASS have set “Surgical Steel” as the title of their first studio album in 17 years, to e released later this year via an as-yet-undetermined record label. The band’s first studio outing since 1996’s “Swansong” will be the first to feature new drummer Dan Wilding (ABORTEDTRIGGER THE BLOODSHED) and also features guest vocals from original sticksman Ken Owen. The CD was produced by Colin Richardson, who has previously worked with FEAR FACTORYMACHINE HEADNAPALM DEATHSLIPKNOT and BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE.

CARCASS guitarist Bill Steer tells U.K.’s Terrorizer magazine: “I found myself playing riffs that sounded like CARCASS. This was after the band had finished the whole reunion cycle of shows and festivals. So, officially, I would have been playing with other bands and stuff, but for some reason whenever I picked up a guitar at home I was coming up with riffs that sounded like CARCASS. I got on the phone to Jeff [Walker, bass/vocals] and said, ‘We could have a crack at writing a couple of tunes and seeing if they’re strong enough and take it from there.’ We also agreed if it didn’t sound like carcass or have that kind of vibe to it, we would just drop it. So that was the thing, we got together and started working on some stuff and just immediately got the excitement back very quickly.”

Adds Bill: “It definitely sounds like CARCASS. I think we just generally by accident captured the flavor of past music that we have done and you can’t help but push it forward. We have really been creative and when you are looking at things like guitar harmonies, it’s way more adventurous on this record. It’s not just parallel harmony like we did in the past, things branch off in different directions.

“A lot of what is happening now is based on rhythms rather than actual riffs. We were discussing this a lot during record sessions about how the riff is almost dying or dead already. People spend a lot of time chugging on the bottom string [but] that’s a rhythm, it’s not a riff. We can’t write a song, never mind an album, without it being choc-full of riffs.”

States Jeff Walker: “I’d like to feel like we are giving CARCASS fans what they want again. I’m a realist and I think Bill has realized and Dan know what people like about CARCASS. We’re definitely delivering.”

While the final track listing has yet to be confirmed, the following songs were recorded during the sessions:

The Master Butcher’s Apron
The Granulating Dark Satanic Mills
A Congealed Clot Of Blood
A Wraith In The Apparatus
316l Grade Surgical Steel
Cadaver Pouch Conveyor System
Captive Bolt Pistol
Intensive Battery Brooding
None Compliance To Astm F899-12 Standard
Mount Of Execution
1985/Thrasher’s Abattoir
Unfit For Human Consumption
Zochrot
Livestock Marketplace

Guitarist Michael Amott and drummer Daniel Erlandsson, who have been touring with CARCASS since the band’s reunion was announced in 2007, are no longer involved with the group due to scheduling conflicts with their main band, ARCH ENEMY. “For live, we’ll obviously add another guitarist — we have someone in mind but we are not interested in a ‘name’ player,”Walker told Decibel magazine in December.

Regarding the sound of the forthcoming CARCASS album, Walker stated: “We’ve taken stylistic cues from all the albums because it’s in our blood, but it’s no rehash or mess of ideas. I think it sounds almost like the missing link between the third and forth albums but with some groove in there. I’ve jokingly christened some parts ‘trad blast’ and some ‘death sleaze’… don’t think for a minute this is just some nostalgic throwback album — we’re setting up another 17 years of ideas for other bands to copy and clean up on. [laughs]”

Asked if this means we’ll be hearing some death metal vocals out of Bill for the first time since “Necroticism”Walker told Decibel, “Yes, already in the can. It’s more along the lines of how I envisioned him backing me up on ‘Heartwork’. That said, my own vocals have a hell of a lot more range than they did in the past solely down to the luxury of having time to record them — I did all the vox for ‘Heartwork’ in two days and it shows! Also, (hopefully) [drummer] Ken [Owen] [who is not involved in the band’s current reunion because he suffered a near-fatal brain hemorrhage in February 1999 and has had some rather serious health problems since then. — Ed.] will make an appearance — we just need to tidy a few loose ends before the mix.”

CARCASS is in the process of booking a number of live shows for 2013, including appearances at year’s Maryland Deathfest, Germany’sParty.San Open Air, Czech Republic’s Brutal Assault, U.K.’s Damnation, The Netherlands’ Neurotic Deathfest and Chile’s Metal Fest.

CARCASS’ last album, 1996’s “Swansong”, was re-released in July 2008 via Earache Records. The reissue came fully remastered on a DualDisc (combined CD and DVD) in a deluxe digipak with extra artwork and a free sticker sheet featuring exclusive CARCASS designs, and included part 5 of a mini-documentary series entitled “The Pathologist’s Report” as bonus video material, plus an exclusive bonus track, “Deathrider Da”.

The first track released from the CD, “Turn The Tide”, can be streamed below.

Commented Amott: “I had the idea for this artwork from my time as a child, seeing posters of two young lovers watching a romantic sunset on the beach — just your typical tacky bedroom art in the ’70s, really… Also, growing up in what is now referred to with some nostalgia as the Atomic Age — the threat of nuclear war was always looming over our heads it seemed.

“Secular Haze” will be available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon tomorrow, February 19.

GHOST was recently forced to modify its name in the U.S. to GHOST B.C. for “legal reasons.”

In the year of 13, the second phase of GHOST B.C. begins with the release of the sophomore psalm, “Infestissumam”, on April 9 via Loma Vista Recordings. Papa Emeritus II succeeded Papa Emeritus at the conclusion of phase one in the year of 12, and the Nameless Ghouls joined him under the unholy church’s current moniker. Make no mistake, though. The rituals still demand the same reverence and praise, fortified through a delivery of sweetly satanic melodies, snaking distorted riffs, and vaudevillian keyboards.

GHOST B.C.’s tour, Haze Over North America 2013, will bow at this year’s Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival on April 14 and the Empire Polo Field in Indio, California. The band will also appear during the second weekend on April 21. All fans subscribed to the GHOST B.C. mailing list before Tuesday, February 6 at 6:00 p.m. EST will be sent a password for access to an exclusive tour pre-sale to take place February 6-7. Tickets will be available for purchase to the general public beginning February 8.

ONSLAUGHT To Release New Album In September

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

UK thrashers ONSLAUGHT have set Friday, September 13 as the worldwide release date for their sixth studio album via AFM Records. The follow-up to 2011’s “Sounds Of Violence” will once again be recorded, mixed and co-produced by Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios in Ribe, Denmark, with work set to commence on May 18.

Commented ONSLAUGHT guitarist Nige Rockett: “It’s awesome to be making another album with Jacob Hansen. There was never gonna be anyone else considered, simply because of the way Jacob works on a personal level and the incredible dynamics of his final mixes. We just know it’s gonna be totally immense.

“The writing is 90% complete and it’s sounding very, very cool. I’m not gonna say it’s ‘louder, faster, heavier’ than anything we’ve ever done because that’s a little bit cliché these days. All I will say is that it’s very fresh, it’s old school and it’s ferocious. The rest we’ll leave up to you guys to decide.”

ONSLAUGHT will headline the first Slaughterfest across Europe in October, with German cult thrashers EXUMER, MPIRE OF EVIL and death metal legends MASTER completing the bill.

Fans will have the opportunity to take part in meet-and-greet events on selected dates.

ONSLAUGHT’s last tour saw the band performing its 1986 album, “The Force”, in its entirety. The band also recorded a new version of its classic song “Metal Forces”, for inclusion as a bonus track on the re-release of the band’s 1986 album, “The Force”, available on AFM Records. The set contains revised artwork and some sleeve notes written by Rockett.

ONSLAUGHT is tentatively scheduled to enter the studio at the end of the year to record its new album for a spring release via AFM Records.

The band’s fifth album, “Sounds Of Violence”, was released in January 2011 via AFM Records.

ONSLAUGHT recruited Michael Hourihan (EXTREME NOISE TERROR, DESECRATION) to play the drums following the departure of Steve Grice in 2011.

KATATONIA’s previous album, 2009’s “Night Is The New Day”, opened with around 2,200 units.

“Dead End Kings” was released on August 28, 2012 (one day earlier internationally) via Peaceville Records. Containing some of KATATONIA’s most poignant and ambitious material to date, the CD sees the quintet conjure yet another milestone in audial angst and melancholy with this much-anticipated follow-up to 2009’s inspired and acclaimed “Night Is The New Day”.

“Dead End Kings”, which features a guest appearance by Norwegian singer Silje Wergeland (THE GATHERING), was recorded at Ghost Ward Studios and The City Of Glass, and was produced by KATATONIA’s own Anders Nyström and Jonas Renkse, and mixed by David Castillo, known for his prior work with KATATONIA, as well as OPETH and BLOODBATH. The album marks the recording debut of KATATONIA guitarist Per Eriksson and bassist Niklas Sandin. Additionally, KATATONIA was joined once again by Frank Default and his invaluable expertise on sampling and atmospherics. The cover artwork was created by KATATONIA’s longtime visual collaborator Travis Smith.

KATATONIA guitarist/co-founder Anders “Blakkheim” Nyström recently finished stripping down “Dead End Kings” to an atmospheric sound devoid of any metal.

Says Nyström: “Early on, we felt it was both peculiar and interesting how the songs could breathe on their own taking a different minimal approach, so we wanted to go back and explore this in a very spontaneous and unpretentious way. Vocals, keyboards and acoustic guitars are in and distorted guitars/bass and drums are out! Stay tuned for a release date!”

In other news, Nyström will spend the next dew weeks “diggin’ into old boxes and transferring ancient VHS cassettes and DV tapes to digital media, so we can finally get goin’ on the actual edit on the documentary that will hopefully wrap up the anniversary DVD that’s been taken forever!”

KATATONIA’s upcoming DVD is expected to contain professionally filmed video footage of the band’s May 6, 2011 concert at Koko in London, England.

SUIDAKRA: ‘Eternal Defiance’ Album Trailer Available

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

A trailer for “Eternal Defiance”, the new albnum from German melodic folk/death metallers SUIDAKRA, can be seen below. The CD will be released in May via AFM Records.

Commented SUIDAKRA singer Arkadius Antonik: “As on the previous two releases, it will be a concept album again, created by [famous Belgian graphic artist] Kris Verwimp in cooperation with us. Our new concept includes a lot of new elements and suprises which will be reflected in the music as well.”

In a 2012 interview with Metal Kaoz, Antonik stated about SUIDAKRA’s new material: “The songs we have finished [so far] are bombastic and we also finished the first song with Tina’s [Stabel] female vocals. This time, it’s gonna be a faster song with a real epic and catchy chorus.”

Bassist Marcus Riewaldt last year announced his departure from SUIDAKRA.

SUIDAKRA has already secured a replacement bassist in Tim Siebrecht, who was a stand-in guitar player for SUIDAKRA on several occasions in recent years.

SUIDAKRA’s tenth album, “Book Of Dowth”, was released on March 25, 2011 via AFM Records.

SUFFOCATION: Second ‘Pinnacle Of Bedlam’ Trailer Released

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

A new three-minute trailer for “Pinnacle Of Bedlam”, the new album from New York death metal veterans SUFFOCATION, can be seen below. The CD will be released on February 15 via Nuclear Blast Records. The artwork was handled this time around by Raymond Swanland and can be found below.

Commented SUFFOCATION bassist Derek Boyer: “This artwork is a perfect portrayal of our music. The cover depicts lyrical content like ‘scales tip in degradation’ and ‘hooded messenger of death is now set forth, punishment for all.’ Raymond is an absolute BEAST of an artist!”

Added SUFFOCATION guitarist Guy Marchais: “The artwork for ‘Pinnacle’ brings another element to an already brutal album. Raymond knew exactly what we were looking for and delivered!”

“Pinnacle Of Bedlam” was produced by the band at Full Force Studios in New York with longtime collaborator Joe Cincotta. The mixing and mastering of the effort was handled by Chris “Zeuss” Harris (HATEBREED, ARSIS, SUICIDE SILENCE).

“Pinnacle Of Bedlam” features 10 genre-defining-bone-crushing tracks and also marks the return of drummer Dave Culross, who previously played on the “Despise The Sun” EP. Founding member and former drummer Mike Smith also makes a special guest appearance on the re-recorded “Breeding The Spawn” track “Beginning Of Sorrow”.

04. As Grace Descends
05. Sullen Days

07. My Demise
08. Inversion
09. Rapture Of Revocation

Stated guitarist Terrance Hobbs: “The meaning of the album title ‘Pinnacle Of Bedlam’, is the tipping point or most elevated moment as we approach the chaotic climax of this existence. The cosmic scale teeters and the fate of humanity hangs in the balance.

“People should expect nothing less than sheer brutality, as we perform together with this incredible lineup! We feel this CD will be the best SUFFOCATION album ever to have been released and are confident the fans will love it.”

SPIRITUAL BEGGARS: New Album Title Revealed

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

SPIRITUAL BEGGARS — the Swedish band featuring ARCH ENEMY guitarist Michael Amott and bassist Sharlee D’Angelo, along with vocalist Apollo Papathanasio (ex-FIREWIND) — is putting the finishing touches on its eighth studio album, “Earth Blues”, for a spring release via InsideOut Music.

The band will celebrate its 20th anniversary with the CD and by playing shows, including a European tour in April.

Commented Amott: “We started the recording process of ‘Earth Blues’ with an eight-day-long session at Fat Guitar Studios (Sweden) with knob-twiddler Roberth Ekholm, a truly great dude who really knows how to capture a band jamming live, sadly a rare quality in recording engineers nowadays! We continued with some overdubs at various studios in Sweden, and it’s all come together super easy this time. We’re finishing up the mixes now with Staffan Karlsson (SPIRITUAL BEGGARS, SHINING, etc.) at his studio in Halmstad, Sweden. Sonically, I think this might be our finest hour yet. It’s a raw, heavy and honest record.”

In order to promote this upcoming release as well as the band’s anniversary, SPIRITUAL BEGGARS have confirmed a European tour for April with support by German rockers ZODIAC, as well as some European summer festivals.

European tour dates:

April 15 – Hamburg, Germany – Logo
April 16 – Köln, Germany – Underground
April 17 – Ludwigburg, Germany – Rockfabrik

The live recording was mixed in Sweden by Staffan Karlsson and Rickard Bengtsson at Studio Landgren 5.3 and The Sweet Spot Studio in December 2010.

— the label founded by legendary Japanese heavy metal music industry guru Tetsu Miyamoto. The Japanese special edition comes in a glossy paper box with a poster and a sticker of the CD front cover. The Japanese edition also features a bonus track, a thunderous cover of URIAH HEEP’s “Time To Live” off the legendary U.K. band’s 1971 “Salisbury” record.

AMORPHIS: ‘Circle’ Cover Artwork, Track Listing Revealed

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

Finnish melancholic dark metal forerunners AMORPHIS have set “Circle” as the title of their eleventh album, due on April 19 via Nuclear Blast Records. Production and mixing duties for the follow-up to 2011’s “The Beginning Of Times” were handled by HYPOCRISY and PAIN mastermind Peter Tägtgren, who has previously worked with such bands as CHILDREN OF BODOM, CELTIC FROST, IMMORTAL and DIMMU BORGIR. The recordings took place at Petrax Studio (NIGHTWISH, CHILDREN OF BODOM, KORPIKLAANI) in Hollola and 5K Studios in Helsinki. The cover artwork was created by Tom Bates (BLEED FROM WITHIN, DEVIL SOLD HIS SOUL) and can be seen below.

Commented AMORPHIS vocalist Tomi Joutsen: “The mystic, androgynous person on the cover represents a spiritual guide. This character was sent from another time and place to help the album’s protagonist find a new path for his life.”

“Circle” track listing:

01. Shades Of Gray
02. Mission
03. The Wanderer
04. Narrow Path
05. Hopeless Days
06. Nightbird’s Song
07. Into The Abyss
08. Enchanted By The Moon
09. A New Day
10. Dead Man’s Dream (bonus track)

The album’s limited digibook version will come with a bonus DVD containing the following:

* The Making Of “Circle”
* Nightbird’s Song (video clip)

Apart from the CD+DVD digibook version, “Circle” will be available on CD (without the bonus track), black 2LP in gatefold, brown 2LP in gatefold and as a bulging limited box, including three bonus tracks and a wristband — exclusively via the Nuclear Blast mail order.

A short summary about the album’s concept/story that spreads throught out the lyrics by Pekka Kainulainen, who wrote the lyrics for most recent AMORPHIS albums: “The protagonist has been dealt a bad hand at birth. He’s always felt himself an outsider with strong potential to become marginalized. Through an accident, after a crisis, he finds a connection with his inner powers. A guide is sent to him, from some other time and place. He gets a chance to take hold of his own life and change his destiny. From the past of Carelian Finland he finds his own spiritual tribe and the power to turn the course of his doomed life. This is a story of survival.”

Joutsen added about the album title: “‘Circle’ represents integrity. Back in the days, when there was something special to talk about, wise men used to sit in circle. Not everyone was invited to join them. But in this story, the protagonist was invited among the wise men’s circle.”

Regarding the direction of the new AMORPHIS material, the band’s guitarist and founding member Esa Holopainen said: “While promoting ‘The Beginning Of Times’, we started to feel that we were giving the same explanations over and over again when people asked about the studio process and how the songs came about. Even though the music was very strong, the making process didn’t offer any surprises and appeared to be quite secured. Now the addition of a new dimension to the developing process has inspired us to focus on our material even more. The songs are extremely strong, bombastic and skull-pummelling.”

“The Beginning Of Times” entered the German Media Control chart at position No. 16 — the best chart position ever scored by an AMORPHIS album in that country. The CD also landed at position No. 1 on the Finnish chart.

THE FACELESS Drummer Quits

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

Drummer Lyle Cooper has confirmed his departure from Los Angeles-based progressive death metal titans THE FACELESS.

Said Cooper in a statement: “After almost five years with the band, I’ve decided to part ways.

“Over the last couple of years it seemed that the interests, goals and musical approach of the band was not that of my own. Also, managerial issues became too frequent with no resolution. These issues, I felt, made it hard for me as an individual to produce as a creative and enthusiastic member.

“I’m sure that proceeding my departure, the band will have no trouble finding someone with the right mindset and talents to step in and keep the band moving forward.

“Thank you to the fans and everyone who supported THE FACELESS throughout the years. I wish the band and its members nothing but continued success and make sure you catch them on their upcoming tours. I will still be pursuing my other musical projects so look out for new ABSVRDIST and ABHORRENT this year.”

THE FACELESS’s third full-length album, “Autotheism”, was issued on August 14, 2012 via Sumerian Records. The band’s first release in over three years saw the group’s leader, Michael Keene, enlist a new vocalist, bassist and additional guitarist to help him see his musical vision come to fruition and these new members have delivered tenfold.

According to a press release, “Autotheism” is “a semi-conceptual record following a man’s journey of self-discovery and transformation into the all-powerful God of his reality. It starts with his realization of the power he possesses and moves through every step of an ever-evolving reality that the future may have in store. Musically, ‘Autotheism’ is expansive in all directions. It is a thought-provoking roller coaster with the occasional sledge hammer to the skull and contains more dynamics and diversity than any offering presented by THE FACELESS to date.”

LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH: ‘Baphometic Chaosium’ Video Released

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

“Baphometic Chaosium”, the first-ever music video from Los Angeles underground black metallers LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH, can be seen below. The clip was directed by co-founder and lead vocalist Autarch (a.k.a. the metal illustrator Farron Loathing). The project, which also marks Autarch’s directorial debut, is the result of a partnership between Farron Loathing and Mortichrome Films. It is described by its creator as “a psycho-dramatic interpretation of the Mass of Chaos and the invocation of Baphomet as performed by a collective of ritual performance artists.”

“Baphometic Chaosium” is the title track of LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH’s third full-length album, which was released on January 22 via Metal Blade Records. The band has appropriately become a five-piece (completing the pentacle) with the recruitment of lead guitarist “Inverted” Chris Velez, before it began developing what is described as “devotional work”, dedicated to their patron god — a mind-altering experience compelled by the embodiment of chaos, death and ecstasy. To record the psychedelic devilry, they returned to Trench Studios, with John Haddad again seeing to the engineering, with Roskva producing, no doubt to the delight of the tributed horned deity.

“Baphometic Chaosium” track listing:

01. Baphometic Chaosium
02. Acid Gate
03. Psychic Waters
04. Cloven Shields
05. Chained To Decay
06. R’Lyeh Wuurm
07. Epicyclarium
08. Oaken Chrysalis

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY Writing New Material

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY has begun writing material for their next album, the follow-up to the well-received self-titled record released via Candlelight Records late February 2012, the reissue of their Eye For An Eye debut, and recently released Scion A/V EP Megalodon. The album, untitled at this time, will again feature the trio of vocalist/bassist Mike Dean, guitarist Woodroe Weatherman, and drummer Reed Mullin.

Last week the band announced their first live performance for the New Year at the annual Metal Fest Chile on April 13th. It will be the first CORROSION OF CONFORMITY appearance ever in Chile. Mike Dean comments, “We have been talking about going to South American forever and with Chile being a big source of so much of our Facebook traffic, I know it’s going to be epic. Another chance for us to do a festival with Down is always a very good thing.”

The festival follows the completion of the band’s recent US tour that concluded in southern California alongside High On Fire. The trio was also a featured participant on Barge From Hell that left Florida shores on December 7. Dean notes, “The cruise was pretty awesome. We had Rick and Jonathan from Torche masquerading as our crew and watching their antics alone was worth the trip. The seas were calm so there was no hurling over the bow.”

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY continues to promote the self-titled album in interviews with media as well spreading word on their recently released Megalodon EP. The EP, sponsored by the amazing folks at Scion A/V, is available for free now via various outlets. Dean says, “The EP was written, recorded, and released in two months time. It really challenged us in a good way. It feels good to get two releases out in one year and I expect that we will continue that level of productivity.” Continuing he shares, “The self-titled album is holding up very well for me. There is a wide variety of material there. It’s all definitely COC but at the same time everything is really a stretch for us. Within the realm of never being totally satisfied, I am very happy with how it came out.”

Formed in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1982, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY quickly transformed heavy music. Politically charged and socially aware, the band has influenced countless others and today remains humble about their accomplishments. With over 1.1 million albums sold in the United States alone, the band continues to find new fans via non-stop touring.
