Black Metal

After the unfortunate demise of Trondr Nefas, I thought that Endezzma‘s Erotik Nekrosis would be the last that I hear of his works. But Urgehal and Season of Mist this year surprised me with a brand new Urgehal record. Despite having lost much touch with the extreme metal genres, I decided to just have a listen to Aeons in Sodom without putting much thought into the background of the album.

Black/Thrash Metal

Formed back in 2009, American black/thrash metal band Frosthelm this year finally releases their debut full length album, The Endless Winter. It’s been quite a long while since my last black/thrash metal madness, so with all the hype surrounding The Endless Winter, I have to say that I was pretty excited to hear what Frosthelm manages to come up with after a wait of almost 6 years.

Top 10 Albums of 2012

Unlike previous years, 2012 was quite a lull, with numerous (high profile) releases that were disappointing, many that were mediocre and extremely few that created a lasting impression. That said though, below I have attempted to list down 10 albums that have stood out from the sea of average releases this year. In no particular order:

Kreator – Phantom Antichrist [Nuclear Blast]

Kreator - Phantom Antichrist

Phantom Antichrist managed to capture my attention like no other recent Kreator releases, with albums like Enemy of God being rather monotonous. This album saw the band taking a more melodic approach, and while there are some inconsistencies on the album, this has been one album that has been particularly memorable, helping me tide through some challenges that I have faced over the year. [Full review here]

Galneryus – Angel of Salvation [VAP]

Galneryus - Angel of Salvation

Galneryus was one of the first neoclassical power metal bands out of Japan that I encountered years ago, and with their new singer Masatoshi they faded into obscurity on my playlist. But Angel of Salvation was a nice surprise, and the things that made me fall in love with Japanese neoclassical power metal in the first place are still present, what with the big melodic hooks of band mastermind Syu, and Masatoshi’s tight fit with the band. Pseudogod – Deathwomb Catechesis [Kvlt/Hells Headbangers]

Pseudogod - Deathwomb Catechesis

Pseudogod‘s debut full length release Deathwomb Catechesis has already made it to quite a number of 2012 top 10 lists, and it is not difficult to see why. 8 years after their formation the band finally drops this album, and they have indeed left quite a deep impact with their atmospheric yet crushing form of death metal, drawing influences from the old school death metal of Incantation to the the bestial black metal pioneered by bands like Blasphemy.

Albatross/Vestal Claret – The Kissing Flies/Black Priest [Roadcrew Records]

Albatross is easily one of my current favourite band out of India, and this split features American doom metal band Vestal Claret on the other side. While Albatross presents a more mature sound compared to their debut EP and all the energy on the split, Vestal Claret balances things out with an epic, 17 minute doom track. [Full review here]

Impiety – Ravage & Conquer [Pulverised Records]

Impiety - Ravage & Conquer

After the rather progressive effort Worshippers of the Seventh TyrannyImpiety goes back to their usual blasting style of black metal with their eighth full length album, Ravage & Conquer. But rather than that thrashy attack that the band is known for on classics like Skullfucking ArmageddonImpiety has a more death metal touch this time, with the aggressive riff work of guitarist Nizam and the relentless drumming of Dizazter (also of Mhorgl and The Furor fame). Certainly an easier album to get into than Worshippers… [Full review here]

Binah – Hallucinating in Resurrecture [Dark Descent Records]

Binah - Halllucinating in Resurrecture

This is probably the third or fourth time I’m mentioning this release this year, but Binah‘s debut Hallucinating in Resurrecture definitely lives up to the hype. Influences from a whole range of old school death metal bands can be heard over here, from Dutch legends such as Asphyx to Autopsy to Incantation, and is sure to please old school death metal heads. [Full review here]

Witchrist – The Grand Tormentor [Osmose Productions]

Witchrist - The Grand Tormentor

Witchrist perfects their craft with their sophomore full length album The Grand Tormentor. The dark, crushing atmosphere that they are known for is now more suffocating than ever, and the huge riffs that are unleashed makes the music sound fucking majestic. Add to that the Eastern occultism-inspired themes and concepts, The Grand Tormentor is one hell of a ritualistic journey, pleasing fans of bands such as DiocletianAntediluvian and the likes.

Endezzma – Erotik Nekrosis [Agonia Records]

Endezzma - Erotik Nekrosis

5 years in the making, Norwegians Endezzma finally release their debut full length album, which probably happens to be one of the last works of late Urgehal/Beastcraft guitarist Trondr. Erotik Nekrosis is an extremely satisfying listen, ranging from straightforward black metal with a tinge of thrash and punk influences to bordering upon depressive black metal. Trondr’s guitar works here are stellar as he masterfully steers the mood of the listener throughout. [Full review here]

Father Befouled – Revulsion of Seraphic Grace [Dark Descent Records]

Father Befouled - Revulsion of Serpahic Grace

Before Incantation released their long-awaited follow up to 2006’s Primordial DominationFather Befouled some release for all the built up tension from the waiting. The suffocating atmosphere and crushing riffs, along with that doomish mood that lingers throughout the album all point towards Onward to Golgotha, causing Revulsion of Seraphic Grace to be a classic in the making. [Full review here]

Ignivomous – Contragenesis [Nuclear War Now! Productions]

CD layout booklet.indd

Ignivomous‘ debut Death Transmutation showed the world what the band was capable of, with their Incantation-brand of death metal crushing the masses. Contragenesis sees the band polishing up the style that they have presented thus far, making for a record that is even more impressive, with a more well-defined sound, making them one of the contenders for best old school death metal band along with bands such as Father Befouled and Dead Congregation.

Needs more listens:

And there are the releases that come in/discovered too late for 2012 for proper dissection…

Weregoat/Diocletian – Disciples of War
Destruction – Spiritual Genocide
Acrimonious – Sunyata
Incantation – Vanquish in Vengeance
The Secret – Agnus Dei
Nominon – The Cleansing
God Seed – I Begin
Anaal Nathrakh – Vanitas
The Royal Arch Blaspheme – II
The Sword – Apocryphon
Vassafor – Obsidian Codex

Album Review: Endezzma – Erotik Nekrosis

Endezzma - Erotik Nekrosis

Endezzma [Norway]
Erotik Nekrosis
Full Length
Agonia Records
Black Metal

Featuring past and present members of other notable Norwegian bands such as Urgehal and Beastcraft, including the late Trondr Nefas (RIP), Erotik Nekrosis is Endezzma‘s debut full length effort more than 5 years of silence after the release of the 2007 EP, Alone. And with a lineup such as this, things can hardly go wrong as the band goes on to present 40 minutes of classic Norwegian black metal.

Chants greet the listener on opening track Junkyard Oblivion, before distorted voices appear, transporting one immediately to a post-apocalyptic setting, but shit gets real quickly as the band soon assault the listener’s ear with their rather thrashy brand of black metal. While the double bass-pedalled fury of drummer Carl hits the listener hard, the reckless riffing of Trondr on the other hand helps to make this onslaught a rather catchy affair, as the listener soon finds himself headbanging to the speedy black metal that is on Erotik Nekrosis. Sorgar’s vocal delivery, while mostly sticking to the tried and tested gruff black metal growl, at times helps to bring in a slight punk feel even. The slight punk sound that is on the album is not limited to the vocals only though, as the riffs of Trondr on the album, and even the bass lines, like on the intro of Enigma of the Sullen easily bring to mind later works of bands like Satyricon, helping to make this one hell of a fun record as well. Yet the band does not forget the atmospheric element that is so crucial in black metal, with the inclusion of haunting organs throughout the album helping to bring about a sense of mystery to the otherwise rather straightforwad music on the album, also giving it a somewhat old school feel at the same time. Slower songs like Hollow even brings about a rather depressive mood, bringing the listener on an emotional roller coaster ride as the album progresses.

This being one of Trondr’s final works, the guitar work on Erotik Nekrosis are also one of the attractions of the album. Apart from the usual black metal riffing that one might be familiar with on his works with Beastcraft and Urgehal, the abundance of lead segments throughout the album also display his shredding abilities. His versatility is also displayed with the ability to steer the emotions of the listener in the music with his guitar playing, easily going from a fast and aggressive style like on the opening Junkyard Oblivion to a calm and almost melancholic mood in the middle of Enigma of the Sullen, almost sounding like a ballad if not for the high energy segments that precede and come after it. Of course, such tracks also display the band’s songwriting versatility, and is probably my personal favourite track off the album with the variety of styles that are included on a single track, the seamless transition between moments and the ability to keep the listener enchanted throughout the entire 8 minutes.

The high energy that is maintained throughout the album, the superb instrumentation on the album and the great atmosphere all make Endezzma‘s debut a strong one, and one that is impossible to not enjoy.

Heavy Metal News – December 04, 2012

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

KING DIAMOND has signed a new three-album worldwide deal with Metal Blade Records.

Commented the band’s vocalist and namesake: “This is gonna be awesome! Another perfect piece of the puzzle. We have the full backup of Metal Blade, and there’s an understanding between us that goes much, much deeper than before.

“Our new business setup will noticeably benefit the fans in so many ways. You must have already noticed some of all the cool new stuff that is happening. Now we can’t wait to get out there and start touring again!”

After a six-year touring hiatus, KING DIAMOND triumphantly returned to the stage in 2012 for European festivals Hellfest and Sweden Rock.

In a March 2012 interview with the Swedish metal blog Bara Metal, King Diamond stated about what he did during his year-long break, “Well, we did keep up with people. A lot. We started a thing where… it’s a Skype web site where people will sign up. And now and then I will call up fans and we talk. We have done that several times. We will call up three fans through that way, ‘King Diamond is calling you,’ and it could be one from Puerto Rico, one from Sweden, one from Scotland. We pick them randomly, but not the same person twice. Then we sit and talk for an hour. They can ask anything. They usually have a lot of question that are the same as the fans ask in the fan club, the Coven. So we get a lot of info out that way, and we upload it so other can listen to it. We are certainly in touch with our fans.”

When asked if there are plans to release new music in 2013, King replied, “That is absolutely the plan. Something has to go totally wrong for us not to do that. We will write material this fall. Hopefully during the autumn, we might do something here in the U.S., after the festivals. But we will not be doing a long tour, it is still a test, we will see what happens. We do not want to take stupid chances, it has to be done properly. And we have a lot to do still, but things are looking good.”

King, 56, underwent open-heart triple-bypass surgery in November 2010. He has since completed his cardiac rehabilitation program and has stopped smoking entirely, changed his diet and is getting regular exercise.

King Diamond made his long-anticipated return to the stage with his MERCYFUL FATE bandmates Hank Shermann, Timi Hansen and Michael Denner on December 7, 2011 at the second of four intimate shows at the Fillmore in San Francisco as part of METALLICA’s week-long celebration of its 30th anniversary as a band for fan club members only.

KING DIAMOND received a Grammy nomination in the “Best Metal Performance” category for the track “Never Ending Hill” off the group’s latest album, “Give Me Your Soul … Please”.

“Give Me Your Soul … Please” entered the Swedish national chart at position No. 28. The CD also landed at No. 58 on the Danish chart (the second highest new entry on the chart behind VELVET REVOLVER).

“Give Me Your Soul … Please” sold 4,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 174 on The Billboard 200 chart.

Progressive metal giants DREAM THEATER have re-signed with Roadrunner Records. The group first signed with Roadrunner in January 2007 and has so far released three critically acclaimed albums with the label. Roadrunner first issued DREAM THEATER’s ninth studio album, “Systematic Chaos”, in 2007 and went on to release “Black Clouds & Silver Linings” in 2009 as well as their most recent album, “A Dramatic Turn Of Events”, in September 2011. The band will soon begin recording a new album as part of the new agreement with Roadrunner.

Commented the band : “We are all very excited to be re-signing with Roadrunner Records! Over the past five years from the release of ‘Systematic Chaos’ to our latest, ‘A Dramatic Turn Of Events’, we’ve developed strong creative and professional bonds with everyone at Roadrunner as well as many great friendships along the way.”

The group added: “Roadrunner’s dedication and commitment to DREAM THEATER has been evident to all of us from the very beginning, and is consistent in all departments and on all levels, right on through to the top. Roadrunner is a record label that is not only great at what they do but who truly understand what DREAM THEATER is all about as well as the amazing people who support us all around the world whom we proudly call our fans. They are a record company we relate to as an organization firmly rooted in its ideals and mission, while always pushing the envelope in an effort to keep things moving ever forward. We’ve reached many career defining milestones while at Roadrunner and are all incredibly pumped in anticipation of our continued future together!”

DREAM THEATER’s August 19 and August 20 concerts at Estadio Luna Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina were professionally filmed and recorded for the band’s next live DVD, to be released sometime next year.

DREAM THEATER’s 11th studio album, “A Dramatic Turn Of Events”, had 14 Top 10 debuts around the world. It also produced the band’s first-ever Grammy nomination for “On The Backs Of Angels” in the “Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance” category.

“A Dramatic Turn Of Events”, sold 36,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to enter The Billboard 200 chart at position No. 8. The band’s previous CD, 2009’s “Black Clouds & Silver Linings”, opened with 40,000 units to land at No. 6. This was roughly in line with the first-week tally registered by its predecessor, “Systematic Chaos”, which shifted 36,000 copies in 2007 to enter the chart at No. 19. 2005’s “Octavarium” premiered with 27,000 copies to debut at No. 36.

ENDEZZMA: ‘Junkyard Oblivion’ Video Released

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

“Junkyard Oblivion”, the first-ever video from Norwegian black metallers ENDEZZMA, can be seen below. The clip was produced by the Effektor Film Company and was directed by ENDEZZMA frontman Morten Shax and R.M. Camera and editing are by R.M.

“Junkyard Oblivion” comes off ENDEZZMA’s full-length debut, “Erotik Nekrosis”, which was released on November 28 in Europe and will be made available February 5, 2013 in the U.S. via Agonia Records. The seven-track follow-up to 2008’s MCD “Alone” features a lineup of musicians who between them can lay claim to decades of experience garnered in the earlier and darker recesses of the Norwegian black metal scene: Morten Shax on vocals, the late Trondr Nefas (URGEHAL, BEASTCRAFT, VULTURE LORD) and Mattis Malphas (BEASTCRAFT) on guitars, Sregroth (URGEHAL, ÅSMEGIN) on bass and Carl Balam (NATTEFROST, ASTAROTH, ex-INFERNAL) on drums. The CD was recorded at the Slaughterhaus Studio in Oslo and crafted by producer Robert Blix. Artwork is by the Kazakhstani artist Alexandr Balinets.

“Erotik Nekrosis” track listing:

01. Junkyard Oblivion
02. Enigma Of The Sullen
03. Against Them All
04. Swansong Of A Giant
05. Hollow
06. Krossing Rubikon
07. Soulcleansing

ENDEZZMA offers up the cold atmosphere that permeated the sounds that came out of the original Norwegian black metal scene and combines them with eerie, seductive compositions to form the epitome of nekro requiems. The ENDEZZMA of today can trace its roots back to 1992 with frontman Morten Shax’s band DIM NAGEL, which, as is often the case with bands, went through the usual vicissitudes of bankrupt labels and states of hibernation. It wasn’t until 2006 that Shax decided the time was right to start playing again and, recruiting URGEHAL’s Trondr Nefas, set about transforming his old band. On the way to their first festival gig in 2007, Shax changed the name of the band to ENDEZZMA, and the transformation was well and truly underway.

Commenting on “Erotik Nekrosis” and the delays that dogged the album, including the tragic and untimely death of Trondr Nefas, Shax had this to say: “After delays that almost seem to have been a series of malicious and morbid curses conspiring against us, it is with understandable relief that we can finally get ‘Erotik Nekrosis’ out there.

“The reasons for the delay are legion, and it is probably best just to say that the path of darkness is a troubled and mysterious journey through life and there’s an intensity to the sickness that accompanies it which can only be dealt with over short periods of time. Sadly, too, it is impossible to predict the season that death will gather its harvest, and we lost Trondr Nefas — our close friend, our brother and our guitarist, under tragic circumstances.

“It’s been five years since we released ‘Alone’, so it’s definitely time for ENDEZZMA to turn the page on what went before and move forward.

“I know many people have been waiting and waiting for this album, and some probably gave up along the way, but I hope we will not let down all of the patient morbid souls.

“This album is for all of the individuals that stayed true to the band, all of you who never stopped waiting. ‘Erotik Nekrosis’ is dedicated to death and to you, Trondr!”

OBSCENITY: ‘From Heroic To Depraved’ Video Posted Online

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

“From Heroic To Depraved”, the new rehearsal video from German death metallers OBSCENITY, can be seen below. The track comes off the band’s eighth studio album, “Atrophied In Anguish”, which was released on September 14 as a digipak and as a digital download via Apostasy Records. The CD was again recorded at Soundlodge Studio in Rhauderfehn with producer Jörg Uken.

Commented the band: “‘Atrophied In Anguish’ is the quintessence of diverse epoches of OBSCENITY. We combined typical ’90s melodic parts and leads with modern blastparts. The new album is a mixture of ‘The 3rd Chapter’ and ‘Cold Blooded Murder’ with a giant sound that goes without Lego-Trigger and other technical stuff.”

The cover artwork for “Atrophied in Anguish” was created by Remy of Headsplit Design (ARCH ENEMY, PSYCROPTIC, WHITECHAPEL) and can be seen below.

“Atrophied In Anguish” track listing:

01. Erase The Divine
02. All You Can Kill
03. Atrophied in Anguish
04. From Heroic To Depraved
05. Swine To The Slaughter
06. Perfect Pain
07. Neurotic Frenzy
08. Diary Of A Scapegoat
09. Monoistic Living
10. Hystarical Illusion

OBSCENITY last year announced the addition of bassist Jörg Pirch (ex-TEARS OF DECAY) and guitarist Christoph Weerts (ex-ASSASINATED) to the group’s ranks. The band was also rejoined by drummer Sascha Knust (ex-THE AWAKENING, SETHNEFER).

OBSCENITY in 2010 recruited Tampa, Florida native Jeff Rudes as its new singer.

OBSCENITY’s seventh CD, “Where Sinners Bleed”, was released in 2006 through Armageddon Music. The follow-up to 2002’s “Cold Blooded Murder” was recorded at Soundlodge studio in Rhauderfehn, Germany.

OBSCENITY was previously signed to Morbid Records, which issued four of the band’s albums, ending with “Cold Blooded Murder”.

EDGUY Frontman Taps URIAH HEEP Drummer For New AVANTASIA Album

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

EDGUY mainman Tobias Sammet entered VOX Klangstudio in Bendestorf, Germany late last month with producer Sascha Paeth (KAMELOT, EDGUY, EPICA, RHAPSODY) to begin recording the new album from Sammet’s AVANTASIA project for a spring 2013 release. The CD will once again be a rock opera based on a conceptual story very similar to the early AVANTASIA albums and will feature “a legion of guest instrumentalists and vocalists,” according to a press release.

The drum tracks for the new AVANTASIA album were laid down by Russell Gilbrook of URIAH HEEP. Video footage of his session can be seen below.

Comments Tobias: “Russell is a killer drummer, a real powerhouse!

“When Eric Singer gave me his schedule for 2012 and how much he’d be involved with KISS, I knew that I had to find a drummer, so I was trying to kind of make a virtue of necessity and add a new flavor to AVANTASIA.

“I remembered having seen URIAH HEEP a few years ago and I was really impressed by the way the drummer mistreated his poor little kit, beating it to pieces like a monster, while still keeping the dynamics and the groove. I knew that if I‘d be in need of a drummer one day, I’d try to work with this guy. And now after the recording has been completed, I know that it’s been a very good decision.

“Russell is a monster and the drums sound amazing. Also the studio must have the best drum recording room I’ve ever been to. Previous clients like ROGER WHITTAKER, TRUCK STOP, RAMMSTEIN, SARAH BRIGHTMAN and the WILDECKER HERZBUBEN knew why they went for the VOX Klangstudio… I am extraordinarily happy!”

Sammet previously stated about the new AVANTASIA material: “[It] sounds very fresh and new and yet you can hear the old classic AVANTASIA vibe on the album. It will be an enchanting fairytale again, far away from any musical trends.

“Our latest album was our most successful album of all time, but I guess it was only that successful because it came from the heart. That’s the only proven remedy I wanna stick to.

“I tried to lay down any thought of expectations, but instead just do a completely unseasonable, unfashionable and even unreasonable piece of art.

“Anyway, I feel at home when I listen to those melodies, choirs and guitars.

“I talked to [former HELLOWEEN and current UNISONIC singer] Michi Kiske and he said that the stuff reminds him a lot of the old classic AVANTASIA material in the good old ‘Keeper’ style. As a fan, now that sounds even exciting to me, so the circle shuts.

“For myself, it’s hard to describe the material in words. I had, and have, so many ideas that I had to restrain myself a little. Otherwise, the album would become too long, and I’m trying not to do a double album this time. However, I am really excited, and I just thought I’d let you know how excited I am.”

SPIRITUAL BEGGARS To Release New Album In The Spring

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

SPIRITUAL BEGGARS — the Swedish band featuring ARCH ENEMY guitarist Michael Amott and bassist Sharlee D’Angelo, along with vocalist Apollo Papathanasio (FIREWIND) — is hard at work on its new studio album for a spring 2013 release via InsideOut Music.

In other news, SPIRITUAL BEGGARS will perform at next year’s Roadburn festival on April 21, 2013 at 013 in Tilburg, Holland.

“Back in the early ’90s, Roadburn founder Walter Hoeijmakers was one of the very first supporters SPIRITUAL BEGGARS had in Europe,” says Amott. “His unbridled enthusiasm for our music back then when most people didn’t ‘get it’ meant so much to us. It’s a great feeling to now play his fantastic festival and celebrate the staying power of SPIRITUAL BEGGARS and the Roadburn concept together! We’re releasing a new studio album and celebrating our 20th anniversary as a band in 2013, and I really can’t think of a better way to start the party than at the esteemed Roadburn festival!”

SPIRITUAL BEGGARS last year released a live CD entitled “Return To Live: Loud Park 2010” in Japan via Trooper Entertainment. The disc features eight songs, capturing the bands high-energy performance at Loud Park 10 at Saitama Super Arena, Japan on October 17, 2010. The live recording was mixed in Sweden by Staffan Karlsson and Rickard Bengtsson at Studio Landgren 5.3 and The Sweet Spot Studio in December 2010. The artwork and design was handled by Hippograffix.

The new lineup of SPIRITUAL BEGGARS made its live debut on October 1, 2010 at Kyttaro club in Athens, Greece.

SPIRITUAL BEGGARS’s seventh studio album, “Return To Zero”, was released in Japan on August 25, 2010 via Trooper Entertainment Inc. — the label founded by legendary Japanese heavy metal music industry guru Tetsu Miyamoto. The Japanese special edition comes in a glossy paper box with a poster and a sticker of the CD front cover. The Japanese edition also features a bonus track, a thunderous cover of URIAH HEEP’s “Time To Live” off the legendary U.K. band’s 1971 “Salisbury” record.

“Return To Zero” was released in North America on October 12, 2010 via InsideOut Music. The follow-up to 2005’s “Demons” was recorded at Sweetspot Studio with producer Rickard Bengtsson.

“Dustwalker”, the third full-length album from U.K. progressive black metallers FEN, will be released on January 21, 2013 via Code666 Records. The effort will be made available in both CD format and as a limited-edition clambox, which will feature a bonus track and include a pendant with the band’s distinctive logo. Artwork for the album was created by FEN bassist Grungyn.

02. Hands of Dust
03. Spectre

08. Epilogue (special edition bonus track)

“Dustwalker” will be FEN’s third album for Code666, which previously released the band’s debut full-length, “The Malediction Fields”, in 2009 and “Epoch” in 2011.

FEN recently announced that it had re-signed with the Code666, a sublabel of Aural Music, for a further three albums after “Dustwalker”.

Commenting on “Dustwalker”, FEN frontman The Watcher had this to say: “If ‘Epoch’ embodies a lonely walk into the deepening twilight of the fens in autumn, then ‘Dustwalker’ represents the cold, sharp greys of a bleak winter’s dawn. An expression of isolation, abandonment and a gradual detachment from the material realm, this album is a starker, more direct representation of the FEN sound.”
