Death Metal

The year 2014 has been quite a successful one for Polish death metal, what with the return of black/death metal greats Behemoth with one of my favourite releases from them yet, as well as Vader‘s kickass Tibi et Igni. While the high quality releases have given one confidence in Polish death metal, it comes with the corresponding level of expectation when presented with another Polish releases. After 6 years of silence, death horde Cinis returns with their sophomore full length album, Subterranean Antiquity.

DECAPITATED Involved In ‘Serious’ Van Accident

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

Polish death metallers DECAPITATED were involved in a serious van accident yesterday afternoon (Friday, October 24) while en route to a show in New Orleans, Luisiana. The band says in a statement: “We are all okay (two persons were hospitalized and released after a few hours) and we will continue our tour with AMERICAN SHARKS and GWAR. This time we were lucky.”

On October 29, 2007, a tour bus accident claimed the life of DECAPITATED drummer Witold “Vitek” Kieltyka, and gravely injured the band’s lead singer, Adrian “Covan” Kowanek, who has yet to make a full recovery.

After he underwent what was deemed to be “successful” neurosurgery, a 36-hour pharmacological coma ended with Covan suffering a cardiac arrest and diffuse cerebral hypoxia (wherein brain impairment occurs due to low blood oxygen levels) because of alleged “medical negligence.” Covan returned home after another six months of treatment in October 2008. Since then, Covan has made vast improvements, but still is unable to communicate and care for himself and requires 24-hour care.

DECAPITATED‘s sixth album, “Blood Mantra”, was released on September 26 via Nuclear Blast.

DECAPITATED: ‘Instinct’ Video Released

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

“Instinct”, the new video from Polish death metallers DECAPITATED, can be seen below. The song is taken from the band’s sixth album, “Blood Mantra”, which was released on September 26 via Nuclear Blast. The follow-up to 2011’s “Carnival Is Forever” was recorded at Hertz Studio in Bialystok, Poland with producers Wojtek and Slawek Wiesawski. The CD cover artwork was created by the Polish artist Lukasz Jaszak, who previously worked with the band on “Carnival Is Forever”.

“Blood Mantra” track listing:

01. Exiled In Flesh
02. The Blasphemous Psalm To The Dummy God Creation
03. Veins
04. Blood Mantra
05. Nest
06. Instinct
07. Blindness
08. Red Sun
09. Moth Defect (digipack bonus track)

The song “The Blasphemous Psalm To The Dummy God Creation” was released as a digital single on August 8 via Nuclear Blast MP3, Amazon MP3, iTunes and Google Play.

Commented DECAPITATED guitarist and founding member Waclaw “Vogg” Kieltyka: “Extreme and groove — I think that’s the best way to describe our new album.

“This time we feel that we have something totally crushing and huge.

‘Blood Mantra’ is the most heavy and mature album we ever did in our carrier. I cannot wait to start to play songs live because riffs are soo deep and powerful.”

DECAPITATED‘s latest effort marks the recording debut of the band’s new drummer, Michal Lysejko, who joined the group in time for their tour with LAMB OF GOD in January.

Vogg previously stated about the musical direction of the new DECAPITATED album: “We flirt with various tempos mixing death metal with grindcore and almost outright black metal atmosphere together with more, so to speak, ‘crowd-puller’ beats verging on groovy, almost stoner-rock climates. There are also a few more modern metal rhythmic riffs where we return to the climate of ‘Organic Hallucinosis’ album. Rasta [Rafał Piotrowski] is a much more experienced vocalist compared to the ‘Carnival Is Forever’ album times. And his voice sounds more powerful and deeper.”

Album Review: Alterbeast – Immortal

Alterbeast - Immortal

Alterbeast [USA]
Immortal
2014
Full Length
Unique Leader Records
Technical Death Metal

Formed under their previous moniker Gary Busey Amber Alert, this American technical death metal outfit changed their name to the more memorable Alterbeast last year, and within a year of that, they release their debut full length album, Immortal.

Right from the opening moments of Flesh Bound Text, with the sounds of classical music being played at the background, one already instinctively knows what to expect from Alterbeast on their debut album. And as the first barrage of riffs and blasts hit the listener, the hyperactive and complex fretwork of Rusty Cornell and Andrew Lamb instantly reminds one of the works of bands such as Necrophagist and Spawn of Possession, along with a tinge of Decrepit Birth and the brutality of Deeds of Flesh. Obviously, the thing that caught my attention from the start of the album to the end are the works of Cornell and Lamb, who throughout the album displays their versatility and technical abilities, from the brutal rhythmic work that creates a wall of sound that buries the listener beneath, to the complex, yet melodic lead guitar works that are so neo-classically inspired.

The brutality that is on the album is also contributed by that relentless blasting of Gabe Seeber, who along with the crushing riffs on songs like Of Decimus Divine even brings in some slight Polish vibe, reminding one of bands such as Decapitated or even Behemoth. Bassist Michael Zamora also holds his ground as a crucial part of Alterbeast, as he often easily emulates the complex riffs of Cornell and Lamb, certainly no mean feat.

The thing that made Alterbeast‘s debut work like a charm is also in the length of the tracks on Immortal, with songs that can go as short as below the 3-minute mark, preventing tracks from overstaying their welcome and the band from sounding like mindless technical tinkery. As a result as well, the shorter tracks on the album are also some of the most memorable and impactful ones.

As would be expected from such releases, the production on Immortal is stellar, with a nice balanced mix that prevents any instrument from being buried. With ImmortalAlterbeast has proven themselves to be an excellent technical band that manages to fuse melody with technicality and brutality, and is definitely one band to keep an eye out for in the future.

GORGUTS Parts Ways With Drummer JOHN LONGSTRETH

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

Guitarist/vocalist Luc Lemay of Canadian technical death metallers GORGUTS has released the following statement:

“I’m writing today to share with you that we will now have a new drummer sitting behind the kit for GORGUTS. Unfortunately, John [Longstreth] won’t be playing with us anymore.

“When I first asked JohnColin [Marston, bass] and Kevin [Hufnagel, guitar] to join me to be part of GORGUTS, rule number one, for me, has always been that each of their respective bands and solo career would always come first.

John, having a very busy touring schedule with ORIGIN, brought Patrice Hamelin in the picture to replace him on more than several occasions. This being said, I was not going to get a replacement for each players. Then, as tour offers came in, we ended up playing more shows with Patrice than John. Seeing the new ORIGIN record coming along and being released this year, John is also developing his solo career with drum clinics; I was apprehending the complexity of orchestrating schedules for future GORGUTS tours. Having a very busy schedule planed for 2014 already, thing would eventually get impossible to work out.

“As far as Patrice being in demand with a lot of different projects, I could have ended up with no drummer available at all to push GORGUTSPatrice and I living close to each other, we can work on music together on a weekly basis and that’s an important factor for me as well. John and I shared on this way before our December tour in 2013 and I really insisted that he played that tour with us since he was part of ‘Colored Sands’ since the very beginning and I wanted to perform the record live with the original lineup.

“All I can say is that I had a great experience playing and making a record with John. He’s a very creative, curious, polyvalent player and a great person to be around. I will miss our long conversations while driving to New York City to Colin‘s place.

“It’s not a question of personality or whatsoever; it’s a question of each of us pushing our individual goals and plans as artists. I want to whish him all the best and in the end, what’s most important for me, is when we’ll see each other in 5, 10 or 20 years, we won’t be talking about not doing a tour together in 2014… we will talk about our friendship through music and how happy and proud we are of having made a wonderful record together.”

Commented John: “I will not be joining GORGUTS on the upcoming tours. Luc Lemay has decided to take out Patrice Hamelin for all dates in 2014. I can’t say I am not disappointed, but I respect his decision and it allows me to concentrate on ORIGIN, the [instructional] DVD, other projects and future drum clinics/workshops. I am very happy to say that some GORGUTS material will be included on my upcoming DVD.”

GORGUTS‘ fifth album, “Colored Sands”, was released on August 30, 2013 in Europe and September 3, 2013 in North America via Season Of Mist. The CD was made available will be available as a digipak CD limited to the first pressing, regular black LP, transparent clear LP and red/yellow colored LP.

GORGUTS will join forces with CARCASSTHE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER and NOISEM for Decibel magazine’s third cross-country domination, set to take place this spring.

VALLENFYRE: ‘Splinters’ Album Artwork Unveiled

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

VALLENFYRE, the U.K. death metal band featuring Gregor Mackintosh, songwriter and guitarist of PARADISE LOST, alongside members of MY DYING BRIDEAT THE GATES and DOOM, will release its second full-length album, “Splinters”, on May 12 in Europe and on May 13 in North America via Century Media Records. The CD’s simple-yet-striking cover artwork was created by Brian D’Agosta, who previously drew a logo for VALLENFYRE bassist Scoot‘s other band, EXTINCTION OF MANKIND, as well as artwork for many other bands.

For a first preview of “Splinters”, a video trailer featuring part of the album’s opening track, “Scabs”, can be viewed at this location.

In 2011, Mackintosh announced that he would go back to his death metal roots with his new band, VALLENFYRE. The level of expectation was set high with a lineup consisting of Hamish Glencross (guitar; MY DYING BRIDE), Scoot (bass; DOOMEXTINCTION OF MANKIND), Adrian Erlandsson (drums; AT THE GATESPARADISE LOSTTHE HAUNTED) local friend Mully (second guitar) — and, of course, Gregor on vocals (for the first time in his career!). Their debut, “A Fragile King”, was a reference to Gregor‘s father’s (lost) battle with cancer; the harrowing, crusty death-doom found on the album was hailed as “a beast of a record” (Terrorizer) and “a sonic force that bites deep and hard” (Decibel). Simply put, “A Fragile King” is “old school to the bone” (Rock Hard).

VALLENFYRE was something I felt utterly compelled to do,” Mackintosh said. “It was almost like I didn’t have a choice.

“I was told by a bereavement counselor that I should write down and vocalize my feelings. I did just that and then everything just seemed to take a natural course.”

In addition to being the main songwriter in PARADISE LOSTGreg stepped up to being the frontman for VALLENFYRE and sang for the first time, citing Karl Willetts (BOLT THROWER), Chuck Schuldiner (DEATH), Oscar Garcia (NAUSEATERRORIZER), Peter Steele (CARNIVORETYPE O NEGATIVE) as influences. “A Fragile King” turned out to be a heartfelt, cathartic and therapeutic release, which now finds it continuation on the even more abrasive and extreme second full-length, “Splinters”.

Inspired by the likes of HELLHAMMER/CELTIC FROSTAUTOPSYANTISECTDISCHARGENIHILIST, early NAPALM DEATH, early BATHORY and CONFLICTVALLENFYRE digs deep into the roots of extreme music, yet due to Greg‘s infallible songwriting skills, as well as the organic and absolutely crushing sound courtesy of Kurt Ballou (CONVERGEBLACK BREATHBEASTMILK), “Splinters” is far away from mere nostalgia.

Stay tuned for a full stream of “Splinters”‘ first single, “Scabs”, coming soon.

VALLENFYRE is:

Greg Mackintosh (PARADISE LOST) – Vocals, Guitar
Hamish Glencross (MY DYING BRIDE) – Guitar
Scoot (DOOM, EXTINCTION OF MANKIND) – Bass
Adrian Erlandsson (AT THE GATES, PARADISE LOST, THE HAUNTED) – Drums

INCANTATION Parts Ways With Guitarist ALEX BOUKS

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

Death metal veterans INCANTATION have announced the departure of longtime guitarist Alex Bouks. The band states: “Over the last few years, there have been some rough waters that we have all been navigating. A hiatus is more desired, thinking this is the best thing to do to save the magic that we have all worked together on.

“With respect, we wish only the best to Alex and his work outside the band. He is truly an amazing musician and we are happy to have worked with him.”

INCANTATION‘s latest album, “Vanquish In Vengeance”, is out on Listenable Records. The band’s follow-up to 2006’s “Primordial Domination” features over 50 minutes of the band’s trademark dark and unholy death metal. Recorded at the Mars Recording Compound with engineer Bill Korecky and mixed and mastered by Dan Swanö (EDGE OF SANITYBLOODBATHNIGHTINGALE) at Unisound studios in Örebro, Sweden, the CD deals with the numerous counts of genocide in the name of religion our society has witnessed over a millennia.

“Vanquish In Vengeance” was also made available in a limited-edition box featuring a flag and an exclusive metal pin.

Although based in Pennsylvania, INCANTATION has enjoyed a 25-year musical career as one of the leaders the New York death metal scene along with SUFFOCATIONIMMOLATION and MORTICIAN.

INCANTATION and Listenable Records‘ working relationship resulted in “Decimate Christendom” (2004) and “Primordial Domination” (2006) albums.
