Atmospheric Doom/Sludge Metal

The first time I heard of The Moth Gatherer was 2 years ago with their last album, A Braight Celestial Light. Not knowing better then, the Swedes were a novelty in terms of the epic soundscape that they managed to create and the fusing of post rock elements into their style of metal. 2 years later, the band returns with their brand new effort The Earth is the Sky, which led me to revisit A Braight Celestial Light resulting in new insights, and better appreciation of these Swedes.

Seven albums and 14 years later, I finally got about to really discovering Kylesa and their psychedelic, progressive style of sludge metal. A little late to the party, nonetheless I guess it’s better to be late than not discovering good music. This year marks the release of Kylesa‘s seventh opus, Exhausting Fire and with the rather good run of stoner and sludge metal in the past 2 years, expectations are rather high for this trio’s brand new release.

BARONESS: ‘March To The Sea’ Video Released

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

“March To The Sea”, the new video from BARONESS, can be seen at this location. The clip, which was filmed at the Union Transfer in singer/guitar player John Baizley’s adopted hometown of Philadelphia, opens with the enthusiastic crowd chanting “welcome back” to the obviously emotional band, highlighting BARONESS’ first live performance following the well-documented accident that left the bandmembers severely injured.

BARONESS has been on the road steadily since May, having performed at several festivals including Bonnaroo, Orion Music + More, Lollapalooza and most recently FYF Fest. Entertainment Weekly described the band’s Lollapalooza performance as “a volcanic eruption of thick riffs, spry solos, and wicked vocal bellows” while Rolling Stone’s FYF Fest review highlighted BARONESS’ “feats of stunning metal artistry.” The band wraps up their North American tour dates on September 6 at KISW’s Pain In The Grass before heading to Europe in late September as well as trekking to Australia in February for the Soundwave Festival.

MAN MUST DIE: New Album Title, Cover Artwork Unveiled

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

Scottish death/grind powerhouse MAN MUST DIE will will release its new album, “Peace Was Never An Option”, on October 28 in Europe and one day later in North America via Lifeforce Records. The CD features a guest appearance by Max Cavalera (SOULFLY, ex-SEPULTURA) on one song.

Comments the band: “This album is by far the angriest yet most diverse one we have done yet. It’s the next level for MAN MUST DIE. We couldn’t be happier with how it’s turned out. It’s brutal beyond the word and yet more melodic and memorable than ever.

“With ‘Peace was Never An Option’, we really focused on the songwriting, which is really important in MAN MUST DIE’s sound, [and] seems to be bypassed a lot in modern music.

“All the classic metal is all about the songs; this is what influences us, this is what we do.”

MAN MUST DIE are an extreme metal band hailing from Glasgow, Scotland. Formed in 2002 and originally born of the founding members’ desire to push their music to new levels of intensity and brutality, the band’s dedication to their craft has since manifested itself in a rich touring history, sharing stages with such acts as EXODUS, MACHINE HEAD and DECAPITATED.

MAN MUST DIE has released three full-length studio albums thus far: 2004’s “…Start Killing” (Retribute Records), “The Human Condition” (2007, Relapse Records) and “No Tolerance For Imperfection” (2009, Relapse Records). Their music manages to incorporate the heaviest elements of extreme metal whilst retaining an attuned sense of melody, confidently shifting from epic, uplifting passages to pure sickness. Augmented by a keen compositional flair and furious, socially aware vocals, MAN MUST DIE is a highly focused musical force.

MAN MUST DIE is:

Joe McGlynn – Vocals
Alan McFarland – Guitar
Dan Firth – Bass
James Burke – Drums

IHSAHN Unveils More Details About ‘Das Seelenbrechen’

Former Emperor frontman Ihsahn‘s latest effort, Das Seelenbrechen will be released on October 21 in North America via Candlelight Records. The album will be available in a CD, a limited edition digibook (with expanded graphics and liner notes) and double 180gm clear vinyl. Pre-orders will be launched via online and physical retail outlets from September 10.

“Das Seelenbrechen” is a bold and adventurous recording that is a musical contrast to the progressive shades and saxophone augmentations of the EMPEROR vocalist/guitarist’s previous two albums (2009’s “After” and 2011’s “Eremita”). The album exists in an entirely unfamiliar sonic world as Ihsahn draws upon his most esoteric influences, fully embracing the spirit of the avant-garde. Comprising ten vivid but disparate explorations in sound that range from bittersweet electronica to deranged and feral improvisation, “Das Seelenbrechen” is every bit as dark and destructive as the artist’s previous work but is far more disorientating and disturbing than anything he has attempted in his past.

“Musically, this album is a very deliberate sidestep to what I have been doing; a necessity to reset the creative parameters so not to fall into formula,” says Ihsahn. “I think I do my best work slightly outside of my comfort zone and I’ve wanted to do something like this for a long time. Free form and improvisational can be scary for a musician but it is very liberating at the same time.”

Recorded at Ihsahn’s own studio in Norway in collaboration with drummer Tobias Ornes Anderson (LEPROUS), “Das Seelenbrechen” courageously eschews traditional metal instrumentation in favor of a limitless textural landscape that evokes the freewheeling spirit of artists like Diamanda Galas, Scott Walker, and John Zorn. Ihsahn notes; “Even though my music has changed over the years, I feel there is a source of inspiration at the bottom of it all that is constant. The general idea for this album was to try and dig deep into this raw source and express it without too much refinery and do so within a less familiar musical landscape. It is the reason for several purely improvised songs and parts on this album. I spontaneously performed with just lyrics and the idea of the atmosphere I was wishing to create. While many will feel it sounds different, I don’t think it is necessarily different from my previous album. And in my head, it will fit in perfectly with my plans for the sixth album.”

“Das Seelenbrechen” takes its name from Nietzche’s famed “Human, All Too Human: A Book Of Free Spirits”. Writings by the 19th-century philosopher and other historical figures have often found their way into Ihsahn’s songwriting.

“The title is taken from one of his aphorisms on art and how, in its purest form, is neither good nor bad,” says Ihsahn. The album’s abstract packaging, again conceived by Spanish graphic artist Ritxi Ostariz, embraces the aphorisms essence.

Few artists in modern heavy music have created such an extraordinary and unique body of work as Ihsahn. Having refined and redefined black metal with the now legendary EMPEROR, Norway’s foremost musical extremist has spent the last decade establishing himself as a fearless and wildly idiosyncratic solo artist.

“Of all my albums, my goals for this one have been the most abstract,” says Ihsahn. “I’ve had quite a rollercoaster ride putting it together but now that it is done I must say I am very pleased.”

‘Das Seelenbrechen’ tracklisting:

1. Hilber
2. Regen
3. NaCl
4. Pulse
5. Tacit 2
6. Tacit
7. Rec
8. M
9. Sub Alter
10. See

BARONESS Parts Ways With Bassist, Drummer

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

Savannah, Georgia-based quartet BARONESS was involved in a road accident on August 15, 2012 in England when the band’s tour bus reportedly plummeted for 30 feet over a viaduct after going through a security barrier during heavy rain. Nine people, including the four members of the group, were sent to the hospital, two of them with serious injuries.BARONESS frontman John Baizley and guitarist Peter Adams have since played a handful of acoustic shows and the band has scheduled an appearance at this year’s Bonnaroo festival, set to take place June 13-16 in Manchester, Tennessee.

Baizley has now issued the following update on BARONESS’ current status and future activities:

“Nothing can truly prepare you for a brush with death. The event is unique one, singular to the observer. Trust me, you don’t want to invite the experience.

“Our bus accident left indelible marks, external and internal, physical and mental, you name it. Each of the nine of us went through and continues to go through an entirely different, yet common experience. We are tied to each other by a trauma, which, despite its damage, has been made individually easier through our shared ordeal. While I would never wish the incident on anyone, I cannot imagine going through that wreck alone.

“Thankfully, injury was not dealt out evenly; unfortunately, it was dealt in great supply. Each of the nine of us now finds our self in a drastically different circumstance, and we each move forward accordingly.

“There are two important things to note. First, we are all healthy. We are recovering at different rates, and we’ll all be fine in the end. Second,BARONESS has made a commitment to pick up where we left off, and get back out on tour, where we belong. In fact, I am personally staking my recovery on this principle; it gives me direction and something to look forward to (finally).

“However, for some of us, the accident necessitated a change that would prevent them from performing music or touring. It is with sadness that we must announce that [bassist] Matt Maggioni and [drummer] Allen Blicklewill not continue touring with BARONESS. The details of their departure are not sensational; they do not come with hard feelings. Nor are the details going to be public; suffice it to say we’d like to keep to ourselves the finer points of this situation, to respect the privacy of all involved.

“While the nine of us must respect the significance of the bus accident in Bath, we must also move away from it and get back to our lives. Simply put, some of the effects and injuries were severe enough to prohibit further activity in BARONESS.

“While we would never have asked them to leave; we have the utmost sympathy for this situation, and in earnest, we wish Matt and Allen the best in the future. In their stead, we have found two musicians who can approach our music with passion and vitality and help get us back out on tour to finish what was seemingly cut short last August.”

The “Secular Haze” video was filmed by Amir Chamdin in the band’s hometown of Linköping.

GHOST was forced to modify its name in the U.S. to GHOST B.C. for “legal reasons.”

Papa Emeritus II recently emerged on the 100th issue of Decibelmagazine for an extensive feature detailing the making of the forthcoming“Infestissumam” in which a nameless ghoul declared, “Regardless of your religious beliefs, we like to trigger the imagination of the listener so they can become a devout burner in Hell or a keen participant of devil worship for at least an hour or two. That’s the GHOST experience.” Decibeleditor-in-chief Albert Mudrian said, “For the cover of our 100th issue, we wanted to spotlight a band that embodies the ideals of the magazine: theatricality, black humor, love for both the past and present of extreme music. GHOST meets and exceeds all of those criteria, and we couldn’t be more excited to reveal the exclusive story of the making of their sophomore album.”

The band’s debut album, “Opus Eponymous”, was released in late 2010 in Europe and in early 2011 in North America via Rise Above Records.

He said in a statement, “After more than 250 shows and 10 years being in the band, I feel that now time has come to change my priorities a bit and see what else life has to offer for me. No hard feelings involved; it’s just that I cannot motivate myself for another writing-rehearsing-recording-promoting-touring cycle and that I’m really annoyed by some of the music business mechanisms that one has to deal with in order to continue this beautiful and exciting, but at the same time very time- and energy-consuming hobby. I wish SUIDAKRA much luck and success for the future — it would all be well deserved!”

Heavy Metal News – August 17, 2012

Baroness‘ publicist, Monica Seide of Speakeasy PR & Marketing has released a statement earlier today regarding the medical conditions of the members and the crew of the band after their bus crash in UK:

The band members of BARONESS and their crew are recovering from injuries sustained after their tour bus crashed outside of Bath, England early on Wednesday morning.

John Baizley [rhythm guitar, lead vocals] has broken his left arm and left leg. Allen Blickle [drums] and Matt Maggioni [bass] each suffered fractured vertebrae. All three remain in the hospital as of this writing. Pete Adams [lead guitar, vocals] has been treated and released from the hospital.

Three of the five crew members who were on the bus have also been treated and released. One member is still undergoing testing. The driver of the bus remains in critical condition.

Please stay tuned for further updates. Thank you for all the support during this extremely difficult time.”

Stoner/doom metal trio High on Fire has released the music video to the track Fertile Green. The track is taken off their latest album, De Vermis Mysteriis, released on April 3. Commented the band,

The video follows the story of Balteazeen, the Christ Twin, who sacrificed himself to give Jesus life. Forever hunted, he roams the slaughterhouse of Time, searching for answers to the riddle of his own existence.

The video is available for viewing below:

Following the limited edition “Hammer edition” pre-release of The Lord of SteelManowar has announced the worldwide release of the album on September 28. It will feature four different mixes and mastering, artwork by fantasy artist Ken Kelly and more, and will be available as a CD, vinyl and digital album. (Source: Blabbermouth.net)

“MANOWAR have always dared to do things differently. You have to look at these two versions like a movie that comes out in alternate versions; a director’s cut or alternate endings or stories even told from different perspectives,” explained bassist Joey DeMaio. “For those of you who enjoyed the first taste of ‘The Lord Of Steel’, meaning the Metal Hammer version, I can tell you that the forthcoming ‘The Lord Of Steel’ release on Magic Circle Entertainment will be even more unique and yes, more brutal,” he continued.

Described by the press as “a brutal and unstoppable force of molten metal” and “flawlessly heavy,” “The Lord Of Steel” is a raw-to-the-bone production, merging vintage elements with the trademark sound MANOWAR have developed over the years.

“When you have to make room for literally hundreds of other instruments such as orchestras, choirs, marching armies on ‘Gods Of War’, for example, you have to create sonic space for that. The fewer instruments you have the louder they can be individually. As an artist you want to give your audience new experiences. This is not ‘elevator music.’ This is an album that hits you hard right between the eyes and does not let up,” said Joey DeMaio.

For their twelfth studio album, MANOWAR have tapped into the world of action heroes and their stories, writing their first song specifically for a Hollywood movie, “El Gringo”, and another one, “Expendable”, inspired by Sylvester Stallone’s action movie franchise “The Expendables”. The band has meanwhile confirmed their next movie project, “Soldiers”, for “The Expendables 2” star Jean-Claude Van Damme.

From the furious title track and the pumping “Black List”, to the power ballad “Righteous Glory” and the Ennio Morricone homage “El Gringo” — “The Lord Of Steel” is full of surprises.

“The Lord Of Steel” (retail edition) will be mixed and mastered by longtime collaborators, mixing engineer Ronald Prent and two-time Grammy-award-winning mastering engineer Darcy Proper.

IMMOLATION Closes Completion For New Album; BARONESS Involved In Accident

BARONESS Involved in Bus Accident

Too many musicians have lost their lives while on the road, and this time it is Baroness that got into a bus accident while on tour in the UK. The original article reporting the accident is as follows:

According to ITV.com, the Savannah, Georgia-based quartet BARONESS was involved in a serious road accident while between shows on its U.K. tour.

At around 11:30 a.m. today (Wednesday, August 15) at the junction of Brassknocker Hill and the A36 in Bath, the band’s tour bus crashed and fell 30 feet over a viaduct.

Seven people were taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath, while two others — who were trapped and had to be rescued by firefighters using hydraulic cutting equipment — have been transported to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol. “Those people are now being treated by ambulance staff,” a fire service spokesman told BBC News.

A Great Western Ambulance Service spokesman said, “Our staff assessed all occupants and provided any required treatment before and while en route to hospital.”

Inspector Nick Hunt, from Avon and Somerset Police, added: “Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident. At this stage it is too early to tell what the cause was.”

IMMOLATION Close to Completion for New Album

In other news, death metal veterans Immolation has released a statement regarding the follow up to 2010’s Majesty and Decay. Comments guitarist Robert Vigna,

Just got out of the studio a couple of days ago, here in Europe now getting ready to do some open air festivals. The new album will have 10 tracks of some of the most intensely dark material we have ever written! Very powerful and very heavy. Steve [Shalaty; drums] really pushed it all to the limits on this one, too. Paul Orofino got us some of the best sounds we’ve had yet!

We were [in Millbrook] for two weeks laying down tracks, having amazing Belgian beers at Paul’s in-house bar BarFunGul, as well as plenty of BBQing! Throughout the time we were there, we got through one blackout and dodged a very intense storm system that had the potential to cut our recording session real short. Luckily, everything worked out.

We still have to add some last touches on to the songs etc., as well as have Zack Ohren mix and master it all, but so far everything is off to a great start.

Be certain that this new album will surely be one of our strongest yet. We look forward to getting it all finished up soon and getting it out there as soon as possible for the fans!
