Formed back in 2009, American black/thrash metal band Frosthelm this year finally releases their debut full length album, The Endless Winter. It’s been quite a long while since my last black/thrash metal madness, so with all the hype surrounding The Endless Winter, I have to say that I was pretty excited to hear what Frosthelm manages to come up with after a wait of almost 6 years.

[xrr rating=4/5]

Despite the black/thrash label that the band has, the thrash influences are very much heavier over here. Introductory track Glacial Eon sounds like what Metallica would have done on their releases, with the acoustic guitars and the atmospheric build up before the unleashing of the first riff that even reminds one of the opening moments of BatteryA Storm of Teeth sees the band taking the heat up a notch, and over here, the Teutonic influences really start to show, with the speed, intensity and chaos being reminiscent of the early works of bands such as SodomKreator and Destruction. Later tracks on the album The Dragon is perhaps the thrashiest track of ’em all, with that surgical precision in the riffing of Dakota reminding one of the works of Vio-Lence or Violator.

Of course, the black metal elements are over here and apart from the frosty themes that the band has incorporated into their music, the bleakness and coldness is also shown through the music itself with a strong touch of second wave bands such as Mayhem or Darkthrone. Slower moments on Tomb of Sordid Ruin bring in some Marduk references, but songs like Forlorn Tales are also a nod towards bands such as Urgehal or Endezzma, while Beneath Dead Horizons and Hell Between Us even remind one of the stylistics of Kult ov Azazel.

Frosthelm‘s debut full length The Endless Winter has been one hell of a fun record, with many moments where one finds himself thrashing himself to the relentless material created by the band.
